Useful information in case of domestic emergencies In the event of an emergency you may not be able to access this information online, so you may wish to consider making a note of what follows. Introduction Below we provide you with some contact telephone numbers, however some of these may get you through to people who cannot understand English very well. Unless you are fluent in Turkish we strongly advise you to have the contact details of a local Turkish friend or acquaintance who would be your first port of call in an emergency. If you are visiting Kalkan as part of a package holiday you should have emergency contact details for your holiday representative. If you are in a villa or apartment you should expect to find a document outlining what to do in the event of an emergency. You may want to check that such a document exists when you book your holiday, and make sure you read it upon arrival. We recommend putting important numbers in your mobile phone and also having a separate written note of them just in case your mobile is lost or stolen. Please note that the numbers below can be dialled from Turkish mobiles or land lines. If you have a UK mobile phone remember to put 009 before any Turkish phone numbers. Water or plumbing problems If the problem is inside your property, check for a plumber in our Business Directory. Do you know where your mains water switch is? If not, why not check now so that you know exactly where to go in an emergency.
If the problem is related to the public supply or sewers/drains, such as a water leak, you can call the Belediye on 0242 844 3131. You will hear a recorded message giving you options. Select option 9 to report the problem to an English speaking member of staff. Normal office hours are Monday to Friday 0800 to 1200 and 1300 to 1700. If you call outside these times you should get a response from the emergency duty staff. Kalkan does suffer occasionally from disruption to the water supply. These are usually transient in nature, however if you want to reduce the chances of your water supply running dry you could consider whether to have your own water storage tank. In extreme situations, if you need to get water delivered in a bowser, the Kalkan Turkish Local News, Business Directory (Services section), has the names of local suppliers. Click here for details.
Electrical problems If the problem is inside your property, check for an electrician in our Business Directory. (Although if the power is off you probably won't be able to use your computer!) Do you know where your electricity isolation switch is, to turn off all the power to your property? If not, why not check now so that you know exactly where to go in an emergency.
If the problem is related to the public supply you can call the Kalkan Tedaş (electricity) office. Bear in mind that Kalkan does have the occasional outage, so before reporting a problem check around you to see who else is affected. If the problem is a general one there is no point making the call. If the problem is isolated to a small area you can call the above number to report it. Normal office hours are Monday to Friday 08.00 to 16.00, with a lunch break between 12.00 and 13.00. If you call outside these times you should get an answer up to midnight.
Kalkan does suffer occasionally from electricity outages. Often this is due to windy or stormy weather affecting overhead powerlines. These outages are less frequent and not as disruptive as they were only a few years ago, however they can still be an inconvenience. You can minimise the impact of these power failures by having your own generator or by purchasing a back up battery. The former is more expensive than the latter. Even cheaper - candles and torches. Electricity in Kalkan runs on a 3 phase cycle. In layman's terms this simply means it arrives at your property in 3 separate feeds - each feed runs different electrical points within your property. You can find that sometimes one of these phases (feeds) drops, leaving you with some electrical points working and others not. Again, these phase outages are not as frequent as they used to be. Finally, the strength of the power supply in this part of the world can vary significantly. Your electrical appliances operate best with a consistent level of electrical current. If the level dips down or surges upwards your appliances may malfunction and this can damage them or cause them to stop working altogether. You can buy surge protectors or regulators to prevent damage to your appliances. Phone and ADSL problems If your phone line or ADSL is not working you need to report the problem to TT Net. Assuming you can find a number that works, you should call TT Net on their special number 444 0 375 - then press 9 to go through to an English opertor. Alternatively, the local office in Kalkan can be reached on 0242 844 3000. Also, you could try visiting them in person, at their office, which is down the side of the PTT office in Kalkan (upstairs). Swimming Pool Problems If you have someone to look after your pool contact them. If you don't, seek specialist advice. The company that provides your pool supplies would be a good place to start. Locked out If you have locked yourself out of your property, and assuming that you cannot access a spare key, you will need a locksmith. In Kalkan you should try Ali the anahtarci (key man) at the Dyo shop, just over the road from Kartin supermarket. His phone number is 0242 844 3473, or for out of hours emergencies only try 05333 464 352. Ali only speaks a little English so you may want to ask a Turkish friend to call on your behalf. Broken Windows If you need to repair broken windows, please see our Business Directory for a specialist. The Turkish for window is pencere and window companies often have the word 'Pen' in their name, for example, Ardiç Pen or Hilal Pen. Legal Assistance In an emergency situation you may require legal assistance. We provide below the contact details for two Kalkan lawyers, one male, one female.
