Useful information in case of a road traffic accident
In the event of an emergency you may not be able to access this information online, so you may wish to consider making a note of what follows.

Introduction
Below we provide you with some contact telephone numbers, however some of these may get you through to people who cannot understand English very well.  Unless you are fluent in Turkish we strongly advise you to have the contact details of a local Turkish friend or acquaintance who would be your first port of call in an emergency.  If you are visiting Kalkan as part of a package holiday you should have emergency contact details for your holiday representative.

We recommend putting important numbers in your mobile phone and also having a separate written note of them just in case your mobile is lost or stolen.  Please note that the numbers below can be dialled from Turkish mobiles or land lines.  All of the three digit emergency telephone numbers shown here will work anywhere in Turkey, however we also comment on what happens if you dial them in Kalkan.

We also provide below a few basic words and phrases in Turkish which may help you to convey a brief message in an emergency.

Road traffic accidents  Phone 156 or 154
There are some limited circumstances where you do not need to call the traffic police or Jandarma in the event of a minor accident.  Please refer to the British Embassy link below, which clearly sets out the circumstances where this is allowed.  Advice from British Embassy

You will note that there is a reference to a traffic accident report form (Tutanak örneği) and a guide to help you with completion.  If you click on the link for the guide, you will be prompted to download a MS Word document.  We recommend taking a copy of this and keeping it in your car.

Towards the end of the guide is a reference to the government traffic department website.  A link is shown to access a blank accident report form.  Unfortunately the link does not work.  So KTLN has kindly provided you with a copy right here.  See the attached PDF document at the bottom of this page, which you can download.  We recommend that you keep a copy of this in your car too.

Remember, completing this form is only permitted in very specific circumstances, and all parties need to sign the form, including any witnesses.  If in any doubt you should call the Jandarma (156) if in the Kalkan area, or the Traffic Police (154) if closer to an urban are such as Kaş or Fethiye.  You should not move your car until told to do so by the Jandarma or Traffic Police.  You will have to produce your driving documents, so make sure you carry them at all times.  If possible, place your reflective warning triangles on the road to warn other road users of the problem.

We dialled 154 from a UK mobile phone whilst in Kalkan and got a recorded message saying we had dialled a wrong number.  We also dialled 156 from a UK mobile phone whilst in Kalkan and got through to an office in Antalya where nobody spoke English.

Please also see our article on rules of the road, in the Knowledge Bank/Transport.

Hospital Treatment
Quite apart from any personal travel insurance you may have, you are entitled to free treatment in hospital if you are involved in a road traffic accident.  This is subject to the traffic police attending and completing the necessary paperwork to show to the hospital.  This cover is provided by your car insurance, and applies if you have hired a car from a rental company, or if you are driving your own car in Turkey, with valid insurance.  For peace of mind you should check this point when hiring a car in Kalkan.

This free treatment must be provided by all hospitals, even private hospitals such as Letoon Hospital in Fethiye.  They are obliged to treat you at a government agreed tariff, which they claim back from the insurers.  This only applies for road traffic accidents.

Legal Assistance
In an emergency situation you may require legal assistance.  We provide below the contact details for two Kalkan lawyers, one male, one female.

Alpaslan Gunal: Office number 0242 844 2977.  His mobile number (in an emergency only): 0505 234 3878
