Süleyman Buran

Occupation / Mesleğiniz
Owner of Pera restaurant and Likya Home Design

Originally from / Doğum yeriniz
I was born in Erzincan, over 1,200 km north east of Kalkan, but my family moved to Istanbul when I was just six months old, so my upbringing was in that great city.

Family / Evlimisiniz ve çocuğunuz varmi
I am married with two daughters aged eight and thirteen.  I am the eldest of three - I have a brother and sister.

What time do you get up? / Saat kaçta uyanırsınız
I set the alarm for 07.00.

What’s for breakfast? / Kahvaltıda ne seversiniz
Something quick, including coffee.

What time do you start work? / Saat kaçta çalışmaya başlarsiniz
I start working at 07.30 when I talk to my workmen about any building or home improvement works we have to do that day.

What time do you stop work? / Saat kaçta işiniz biter

At the moment it is around midnight when the last customers leave Pera restaurant.

Tell us something about your background and your working life. / Lütfen biraz bilgi söylermisiniz kendi arka plan yaşamınız ve çalışma hayatınız ile ilgili.
I grew up in Istanbul in the cosmopolitan neighbourhood of Kurtuluş, in the Şişli area of the city (on the European side of the Bosphorus).  It was a great fusion of cultures - Greek, Jewish, Armenian and Kurdish living side by side with Turkish people.  This amazing melting pot had a big influence on my outlook on life.

I decided that I would like to work in tourism and I went to tourism school.  My first job was working at a hotel in a lovely Black Sea resort called Şile.  It is quite close to Istanbul but it is very similar to Kalkan.  I was learning English at work and also by watching Hollywood films, trying not to look at the Turkish sub-titles.

Then came my national service which I spent in Köyceğiz (not too far away from Dalaman).  I returned to Istanbul and started working in the Conrad Hilton hotel.  By this time I had a plan to move somewhere south on the Turquoise Coast but I needed to save money to do that.  I got another job working on a cruise ship out of the United States, visiting the Bahamas.  This was quite tough work and I returned to Istanbul to try something else.

I tried a few things actually, including running a fish restaurant in Beyoğlu district, then a live music bar, followed by a wine bar.  By 2006 I said to my wife it was time for us to make a life away from Istanbul in a southern coastal resort.  Back in 1997 we had first visited Kalkan and Kaş and we loved this part of the world.  And so it became our destination and our new home in 2006.

For three seasons I worked at the Elixir Hotel and then I moved to the Fener Cafe where I spent many happy years.  In 2013 I set up my Likya Home Design business and in 2014 I left Fener Cafe and set up my own restaurant, Pera in the old town.

What’s the best thing about your job? / Yaptiniz işte en sevdiği şey nedir
For the building projects the best thing is that you have created something permanent that people will hopefully like and get enjoyment from.  With Pera restaurant the best thing is meeting people and making new friends.

Describe a typical day / Bir gününüzün nasıl geçtini anlatir misiniz
I have two businesses to keep me busy.  One is the design and construction business where I can be working on a number of projects at the same time.  The other is my restaurant on Süleyman Yılmaz Caddesi.

No two building projects are ever the same so it’s hard to describe what a typical day looks like.  I can be involved in discussions with clients in the early design stage, or sourcing materials for a project, or getting on with the actual build phase.

As far as the restaurant is concerned I like to be there for lunch at which point I will make sure that we are all prepared for the busy evening time.  I am usually at the restaurant in the evening until closing time.

Do the seasons make a difference with your work? If so, how? / Yazın işinizde değişiklik oluyormu? Oluyorsa anlatın?

Yes they do.  There are limitations on what construction is allowed in the tourist season so pretty much all of the major and noisy work takes places outside the main season, unless the project is out of town.

Obviously the busy time for Pera restaurant is in the tourist season.  The whole street has come alive over recent years and there is a great buzz about the place.

Last winter I tried to stay open but it was very quiet.  More than anything it turned out to be a good opportunity to have friends and acquaintances round in a more relaxed and less busy atmosphere.  In terms of business though it was hard to justify opening out of season and I don’t think I will do it this winter as I think I will be busy enough with building projects.

What makes you happy? / Sizi en çok ne mutlu eder
The happiness of my daughters.  Seeing them smile.

If you were not doing this job, what else would you like to do? / Şu anki yaptiğiniz işi yapmıyor olsaydiniz ne iş yapmek isterdiniz
When I was young I had a dream that I might become a pilot, but it never happened.  As it turns out I am now doing two things which give me a lot of satisfaction.

What music do you like to listen to? / Hangi müziği dinlemeyi seviyorsunuz
I like western and Turkish music.  In my car I may listen to things like the Beatles, Bee Gees, Leonard Cohen, REM or Bruce Springsteen, for example.

If you could meet anyone in the world, living or dead, who would it be, and why? / Eğer dünyada yaşayan yada yaşamayan herhangi biriyle tanışmanız mümkün olsaydı onun kim olmasını isterdiniz?
I would like to meet our President, Recep Tayıp Erdoğan to talk about the future of our country.

Tell us something about yourself that not many people know. / Kendinizle ilgili bir çok insanın bilmediği bir şeyi anlatırmısınız
I like to do pen and pencil drawings - things like portraits.  One day when I retire and have more time I would like to spend more time doing this.

Anything else / Başka her hangi birşey
Some people wonder how I got into the home design and building business, because it is nothing to do with tourism, which is what I studied.  The answer is that when I was young I used to help out my uncle in his construction business and I really enjoyed doing it.  After that I would work on small projects from time to time but more as a kind of hobby than my main work.  Now it's much more than a hobby.
