UK - Turkey time difference only 2 hours from this Sunday PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 25 March 2017

Daylight Saving Time changesIn 2016 the Turkish government announced that it was pulling out of the biannual Daylight Saving Time (DST) protocol whereby countries advance their clocks by an hour in spring and fall back by an hour at the end of summer.

Last year on Sunday 30th October Turkey did not turn the clocks back by an hour.  Instead they are now maintaining DST all year long.

This means that between Sunday 30th October 2016 and Saturday 25th March 2017 Turkey has been 3 hours ahead of UK time.  However from tomorrow, Sunday 26th March 2017 there will be a difference of just 2 hours until the end of summer.

Turkey to UK flights - ban on certain electronic devices PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 25 March 2017

Ban on electronic devices

Update Saturday 25th March - see below: The UK government has today followed the United States of America in banning certain electronic devices from cabin baggage on flights from some countries, including Turkey.  The ban comes into effect over the coming days and no later than 25th March 2017.

The UK Department for Transport web site announced the ban which will prevent travellers taking laptop computers and some tablet computers in the cabin; instead they will have to be placed in hold luggage.  Smaller devices such as iPhones and other similar mobiles will be permitted.

Specifically phones, laptops and tablets larger than 16.0cm x 9.3cm x 1.5cm are not allowed in the cabin on flights to the UK from Turkey, Lebanon, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Tunisia.

The ban does not apply to outbound flights from the UK to these countries but clearly if you are booking a return flight you will need to consider whether you wish to take your electronic device with you as it will have to go in the hold on the return flight if it exceeds the above dimensions.

The UK FCO travel advice page for Turkey has been updated to reflect these new rules.

Caring for our environment - a meeting on Monday 3rd April PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 22 March 2017

Kalkan environmentWe are fortunate to live in a beautiful part of the world but like many other places it can easily be blighted by careless and thoughtless actions.

A number of Kalkan residents have been discussing informally what we can all do as individuals to take care of our environment.

This small group has decided it would be useful to have a meeting where anyone can come along and join in the debate.  It will be held on Monday 3rd April, starting at 19.30 at the Blue Turtle Cafe Bar.

A short video will be shown and a number of topics are likely to discussed including recycling, the use of plastics and the local water supply.

2017 Kalkan rentals

Update Monday 20th March - see below:  According to the recent KTLN survey on Dalaman International Airport around 85% of travellers who arrive in Turkey via Dalaman come as independent travellers.

In terms of accommodation this survey showed a fairly even three way split between those who rent villas/apartment, those who choose hotels and people who own their own place in the sun.

But these figures relate to a large area roughly from Dalyan to Kaş.  If we look back to our last Kalkan survey, conducted a year ago, we find that almost 50% of visitors to Kalkan rent a villa or apartment.  Property rentals is a particularly big market in Kalkan.

So we thought we would take a look at this market and see how well it is operating, both from the property owner’s perspective and also as far as the holidaymaker is concerned.

Kalkan Culture House - revitalised for 2017 PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 09 March 2017

Amy exhibitionThe operation of the Culture House in Kalkan falls under the responsibility of the Kaş governor.

For many years it has provided a focus for culture and art in Kalkan through various exhibitions and displays, particularly during the main tourist season.

Over the winter months we and a number of others gave feedback to the governor of Kaş saying that the Culture House programme last year was a little disappointing and that in our opinion it did not deliver as much as in previous years.

In our view it requires more proactive management - people who can bring innovative and creative thinking to deliver a more interesting and wider spectrum of events looking at all aspects of art and culture.

Kalkan harbour

It’s a while since we told you what was going on down at the harbour, so here is a brief update with photos.

The last time we covered the harbour was in our end of year review on 31st December 2016 - click here to read our report.

You may be disappointed to learn that very little has happened concerning the completion of the work that was started in the area close to the recently built restaurant units.  It's been a very quiet winter.

Let's recap on where we are with the redevelopment work.
