GIYKIMBIL: short term property rentals and related matters - update November 2017 PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 10 November 2017

Property rentalsWe last wrote on this subject on 6th June 2017.  Click here to read what we said: GIYKIMBIL: short term property rentals and related matters - update June 2017.  Today's report brings you important news of a change in approach from the local tax authorities in Kaş.

Back in June we told you about what we termed "the elephant in the room" - namely whether renting out for holidays was classed as "commercial activity", and if it was how this would oblige property owners to establish a business (company, partnership or sole trader).

KTLN was, and still is of the opinion that holiday rentals do constitute commercial activity.  More importantly, several months ago it was viewed as such by officials in some parts of Turkey, including Muğla province, however the prevailing view of the authorities in our part of the world has been more benign.

There has been no obvious sign that local tax officials or accountants were expecting people who rented out properties to establish a business.  But this laissez faire approach appears to have changed now.

Turkey remembers the death of Atatürk PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 10 November 2017
AtatürkAtatürk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey, died on 10th November 1938.

The date of his death is commemorated every year in Turkey.

Today, all across the country, at precisely 09.05, the time of his death, many people stop what they are doing, and stand in silence, out of respect for Atatürk.

Whilst people are standing in silence, some Belediye Zabita vehicles and the Coast Guard will sound sirens at precisely 09.05, for one minute.

Kalkan boats about to be hoisted out of the water PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 06 November 2017

Kalkan boatsIt's that time of year again.  The huge Lider Vinç is about to stop by to gently hoist the day trip boats out of the water and on to the quayside.  It is due to arrive tomorrow, Tuesday 7th November and should be in full swing by Wednesday.

This impressive spectacle is for many of us, the definitive act that signals the end of the main tourist season in Kalkan.

What we like about this annual operation is the combination of concentration, camaraderie and good humour amongst the boatmen, as they make sure that each boat is carefully manoeuvred into place.

Power to the people - electricity generating solar panels installed in Sarıbelen PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 29 October 2017

Solar panels in SarıbelenUp in the mountains behind Kalkan solar power technology is coming to the sleepy village of Sarıbelen.

Rows of solar panels are being installed on the mountain side to harvest the sun's rays and generate electricity that will be trickled into the grid.

The installation team told us that this is being replicated in other nearby locations, so expect to see more of this environmentally friendly power production popping up in our region.

If you think about it sunshine is something we have rather a lot of so it makes perfect sense to use it, especially as this type of energy reduces our reliance on fossil fuel and nuclear sources.  Every little helps!

Republic Day (Cumhuriyet Bayram) in Kalkan - 29th October 2017 PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 27 October 2017

Republic Day - Cumhuriyet BayramSunday 29th October is Republic Day, (Cumhuriyet Bayram), which this year celebrates the 94th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Turkey by Atatürk.

In the morning, some time around 09.00, the school band will march into town to the Kaya/Kipa supermarket roundabout and back to school.  The celebrations will continue at the school amphitheatre where the children will perform a special show.

As was the case last year there will be a torchlight procession in Kalkan, this year starting at 19.00 from the bus station, walking down to the harbour.  Everyone is welcome to join in.  They will also be holding a similar walk in Kaş at the same time.

Kaş Road diversion in place through Gökseki PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 25 October 2017

Kaş Road diversionA section of Kaş Road (D400) has been closed for several days now while work is done on the road by the entrance to Kaş State Hospital (Devlet Hastanesi).

The temporary closure has seen traffic diverted through the nearby village of Gökseki, as shown on the map below.  The D400 road between Kalkan and Kaş is extrememly busy and there have been bottlenecks in Gökseki as large lorries have manoeuvred slowly through the narrow streets in the centre of the village.

We have tried to discover how long this diversion is in place.  Nobody can give us a definite answer however unofficially we have heard three to four months mentioned by people who work in the health service in Kaş, so until further notice it may be prudent to allow extra time for journeys between Kalkan and Kaş.

Tuesday, 24 October 2017

Quiz nightYou know it's nearing the end of the tourist season when this ever popular expat evening entertainment kicks in.

Quiz nights return to the Blue Turtle Cafe Bar on Tuesday 7th November, starting at 20.00.

The quiz takes place most Tuesdays out of season, but may take the occasional break - check before you go.

It would be true to say that some people take the quiz more seriously than others, (look for the furrowed brows), but at the end of the day, it is a fun event, and there is always a good atmosphere.
