Quite a few businesses told us that things were as good as last year, if not better, which is quite an achievement, given the economic conditions back in the UK - where most Kalkan visitors come from. Despite any money concerns, clearly for many people, a visit to Kalkan remains high on their list of priorities. Generally speaking, restaurants, hotels and supermarkets appear to have done well. With regard to other retail shops, opinions varied. Quite a few retail business people reported that many customers have been looking more and spending less this year. Some food and drink establishments commented on the fact that certain customers were cutting back on their overall spend. And of course, with most visitors renting villas and apartments, a significant number now self-cater for at least part of their stay. The season got off to a poor start, with the months of May and June less busy this year - due in part to the problems caused by the volcanic ash cloud. However, we are informed that July, August and September were good months. One thing that businesses sometimes mention is being able to extend the season, and every year it seems that more and more businesses remain open. Check out The KTLN Kalkan Guide to What's Open 'out of season' 2010/2011 to see what you can expect to find in Kalkan, over the autumn and winter months. Out of season of course, you may encounter the sight and sounds of construction work. Work is allowed to start on 1st November 2010. You can expect work to continue along the D400 road, as they move along towards Kışla and beyond. This work is scheduled to be completed by May 2011.From enquiries that KTLN has made, we do not expect there to be as much property construction work in Kalkan this winter. We have heard that permission has been granted by the Belediye for around 30 developments only. In addition to that, there will no doubt be many properties being altered, renovated, or simply subject to routine maintenance.
Looking at the wider picture, it is true to say that it's been a good year for tourism in Turkey. Figures for the first 9 months of 2010 show that 23.1 million visitors came to Turkey, compared with 21.8 million in 2009 - an increase of 6%. In the same 9 month period, some 2.3 million British nationals came to Turkey (10% of all visitors to Turkey) - that's 12% up on the same period in 2009. And all this comes at a time when tourism in Europe is not doing so well, and in neighbouring Greece they have had a disastrous year, with income from tourism down significantly. But the fact that Turkey has had a good year will come as no surprise to Kalkan regulars. What may once have been a secret is now definitely out of the bag, and it would seem as though more and more people are discovering for themselves what a wonderful country this is. As the season draws to a close, KTLN has been talking to a variety of business people in Kalkan, asking for their views on how the season has been for them. The impression we have is that for most businesses, 2010 has been good.
