I signed up to KTLN on the recommendation of a British friend who lives [in Kalkan].  He loves it! And now so do I!

Republic Day celebrationsArticle updated Thursday 28th October: On Friday 22nd October, KTLN told you about the forthcoming Republic Day celebrations in Kalkan, taking place on Friday 29th October.

We now bring you a few more details on what's happening - see below.

Just before 9am, the Kalkan First School band will march down to Atatürk's statue in town.

At 9am there will be a brief ceremony, which will be attended by the Mayor and several other local officials.

Once the ceremony has ended, (around 9.30am), people will make their way up to the market area, close to the Belediye (where the fruit and vegetable stalls are on Thursdays), where local schoolchildren will provide a variety of entertainment.

We don't have a detailed schedule, however it will no doubt include music, singing, dancing and speeches. They practice hard for this and it's always well worth watching.  Seating is provided for spectators.

NB - time revised by Belediye: Later in the day, at 6.30pm, a torchlight procession will make its way from just below the bus station (not the Belediye offices), flags waving, down to the harbour, where the evening festivities will begin. If you want to join in, feel free to join the crowd.

The Belediye will take over the harbour side, arranging tables and chairs for well over 1,000 people. Last year, we estimate there were about 1,500 people down there. We understand that food will be provided - all you have to do is buy your drinks from one of the many traders.

Republic Day 2009

Again, we don't have precise details of the entertainment that has been organised, however we have been told that it wll be very similar to last year. So that will include traditional music and singing, and dancing, plus a firework display.

Our advice is to get there in good time to get a seat. Thursday may be rainy, but the weather forecast for Friday is good. If you have a Turkish flag, now is the time to be hanging it up for all to see.

Remember that Friday is a national holiday, and the banks will close from lunch time on Thursday, and reopen on Monday morning.
