Kalkan match of the daySunday morning saw an event of unparalleled importance in the Kalkan sporting calendar, with the boys of Parc Kalkan, taking on the men (and one woman) of the British ex-pat community, in a 7 a side football match.

This was followed in the afternoon, by a line dancing spectacular, in Parc Kalkan.

KTLN reports on another wonderful day in Kalkan, and how local children will benefit from the day's events.

The scene was set
Everyone had made sure to put their clocks back by an hour, and turned up at the appointed time. Under a sunny, clear blue sky, the players took to the Belediye football pitch, which was resplendent in green following the laying of new artificial grass. Spectators packed the benches overlooking the pitch, and the occasional Turkish passer by stopped to gaze upon this curious sporting scene.

The teams
The Parc Kalkan squad comprised 7 players, whose average age was only around 25 - even allowing for Cenk. The squad:
Öz; Mali; Koray; Mirzali; Gökhan; Tuncay and Cenk (Captain).

The British squad was slightly bigger, reflecting the pool of talent currently available - and also the fact that Kalkan has lots of Brits with nothing better to do on a Sunday morning.

They were Andrew H; Andy M; Barry; Frank; Gareth; Jim; John; Juney; Malcolm; Nick; Paul; Roy; Steve (Captain); Stewart; Tim and Trevor. Despite an average age of over 50, such a sizeable squad enabled the away team to rotate players, providing ample opportunities for fag breaks and treatment in the oxygen tent.

Match highlights
Highlights included goals from Tim, Malcolm, Paul (a rocket), and Andrew. Frank was the most prolific scorer, with a hat-trick - unfortunately only 2 were for his side, whilst the other was a well taken headed own goal.

A special mention also to goalkeeper, Trevor (aka 'The Cat'), who pounced upon anything dangerous in the goal area.

To his credit, Ian, the referee ensured that this was a free flowing match, and stoppages were few.

We particularly liked the fact that the ref did not get hung up on minor infringements; for example on the odd occasion when the British team inadvertently ended up playing with 10 players.  Clearly, this must have significantly disrupted the balance and formation of the British team, but the referee generously played advantage in favour of the Parc Kalkan team.

The final score in a keenly contested match was Parc Kalkan 3 - Kalkan Brits 6.

The British team limped down the hill to Parc Kalkan for the post match de-briefing, whilst the Parc Kalkan team ran back to put the kettle on, and pour the Efes. Most of the spectators came along to join in the post match analysis.

Further entertainment
A little later on, at 4pm, the assembled crowd were treated to a number of line dancing sequences from Mu, and her class - Brenda; Caroline; Chris; Doreen; Eva; Jenny; Lynne; Marian and Sue. The dancing was excellent and they had the crowd shouting for more.

With such a large audience on hand, reflecting on an outstanding day, the opportunity was taken to collect some money for local children. A sum in excess of 1,000TL was handed over, and this will be used to buy things for the local kindergarten.

Thanks to everyone who took part, and in particular Welsh Steve for pulling together the British squad, and of course to the guys at Parc Kalkan for the fun way they entered into the spirit of the day, and for hosting such a great afternoon.

KTLN photos of the day
Below, we provide a few photos from the day. The final image is our fun Spot The Ball photo. It's not a competition. There is no prize. Later this week, we will update this report with the original photo showing the ball, so you can see how close you were. (Update: Original image now added).
