Tuzköy - a ghost village in Cappadocia PDF Print E-mail

CappadociaA sad story is emerging from the Cappadocia region of Turkey.

Not far from the busy tourist destinations of Nevşehir, Ürgüp and Göreme, is the village of Tuzköy.  It is a place that has been blighted by a rare form of cancer, mesothelioma, which affects the lining of the chest and abdomen.

Tuzköy is about to become a ghost village, as its inhabitants are to be relocated, away from the carcinogenic mineral erionite, which is found in large quantities in the area.

You can read the full Todays Zaman article on this, by clicking on the following link: Todays Zaman report

Below: A Google map showing the location of Tuzköy, in the Cappadocia region.

Tuzköy, Cappadocia

Cappadocia draws in huge numbers of tourists every year, who are keen to see its unique geological features, including fairy chimneys, and underground caves.  Many visitors take a hot air balloon ride, which provides an excellent way of taking in the remarkable landscape.

Lots of people from Kalkan have made the journey to Cappadocia, and in fact another trip is heading there next week.  Here are a few photos, showing the kind of thing they can expect to see.
