The main reason [for joining] is that since I have been in Kalkan (14 years), I have for the first time good information about what is happening in Kalkan.

Fundraising for Kalkan childrenHere is a report from Ros Lockhart, organiser of yesterday's fundraising event for Kalkan children.

Article updated Tuesday 30th November: On Sunday 28th November, all over Kalkan, the delicious aroma of freshly baked cakes, scones and biscuits wafted on the breeze.

Our fundraising cake sale held at the Lounge Bistro received tremendous support. We had over 40 donations of cakes, biscuits, mince pies and scones.

So popular was the event that within two hours of opening, we had completely sold out!

The Christmas wrapping and cards stall was very popular and our biggest seller here was the beautiful hand made cards donated by a very talented Kalkan resident. We had more than thirty jars of chutney, and marmalade but could have sold twice that number - we even had a polite tussle between two Kalkan ladies over the last jar of the Christmas cranberry and apple chutney - we will be making more we promise.

The book stall was a big hit and we plan to have a monthly book sale at the Lounge Bistro to cater for everyone's winter reading needs. Thanks to Lea who brought us a large stock of new gifts which were snapped up as early Christmas presents.

It was difficult to keep a running total of how may people came but at the busiest time, we had over 100 people, eating cakes, drinking coffee and browsing.

Without the generous support of so many Kalkan residents, we could not have organised this event, so thank you everyone. When we planned the sale a few weeks ago, we had hoped to raise 500 lira, which we were planning to put towards the outing for the Rehabilitation Centre, for children with special needs.

In fact, we raised more than twice that: on the morning, we took 1,100TL and a generous donation of 200TL gave us a total of 1,300TL, so we will now have more than enough in the kitty to pay for an outing for the children and their parents - for many of the children, this will be the first day out they have ever had.

Update Tuesday 30th November: KTLN members who could not attend on Sunday, have kindly donated a further 600TL (so far).  This brings the current total to 1,900TL.

We are also working with a mother at the Kalkan school who is organising the clothes and shoes shopping list for children in need at Kalkan school. We will use some of the money raised to make up any shortfalls in the list.

Our next fundraising event will take place on the last Sunday before Christmas (December 19th) at Parc Kalkan.

We are delighted to now be able to confirm that we have received news from the North Pole that Santa Claus is coming to spend a few days over the Festive Season with his family, at his birthplace in Patara.

There is a limit to how much snow even Santa can take - and he will be making a personal visit to our Christmas Grotto at Parc Kalkan.

Santa is 92 years old (Santa's birthdays are calculated differently to us normal beings) but he is still up to date with modern technology. He will be leaving his sled and reindeer back at the North Pole, and will arrive in his open top sports car, having completed a few circuits of the streets of Kalkan.

So come and join us then for mince pies, mulled wine and carols and the opportunity to meet the original Santa Claus.
