The site is easy to navigate, has a wealth of information, and is everything I like to see in a website.  Any questions I could have asked, already had clear answers on KTLN.  The webcams were an added bonus.

Belediye Board December 2010The last meeting of the year took place last Tuesday at the usual time of 2pm, with 16 members of the public turning up to listen.

The published agenda listed several parcels of land in Kalkan, that were to be discussed, in relation to planning matters.

At the start of the meeting, the Mayor told the Board that further time was required to fully understand the issues pertaining to these pieces of land, and he proposed that they should be dropped from the agenda.

The Board voted and agreed to this.  Consequently, there was a much slimmer agenda to work through.

Belediye Board December 2010The Board turned to financial matters. They reviewed the prices for many of the services that they provide - for example, the cost of renting out the wedding salon at the bus station. Some charges were kept the same, whilst others were increased by up to 10%.

They also agreed an internal inter-departmental budget transfer, which will allow them to purchase a couple of new bin lorries.

This appeared to be the end of the formal agenda, but a few more things were discussed.

Also, as a aside, KTLN readers may be interested to know that during Board meetings, when the call to prayer (ezan) is made, the meeting falls silent, and waits.

The Board talked about the new service road (Kışla Caddesi), that will run parallel to the D400 between Kalkan and Kışla. In particular, they discussed some of the technical issues around drainage and also the way in which the area around the road will look, from an aesthetic perspective.

One member of the Board asked why there was nowhere for all the itinerant workers to go, to meet and drink çay. They can't afford to go into many of the cafes in Kalkan, and end up wandering round town. Whilst the question was asked, we did not hear any solution put forward.

The subject of burglaries was raised. The actual words used were "burglaries of foreigners". A member of the public, put it to the Mayor that Kalkan needs a good system of CCTV cameras, to help the Jandarma to catch burglars and other criminals.

The authorities in Kalkan did install cameras a few years ago, however they don't work properly, and given advances in technology, more sophisticated systems are now available, at a lower cost.

[Editor: The subject of CCTV was raised at the recent foreigner's meeting with the Jandarma, where the Mayor was also present. KTLN understands that a number of senior figures in Kalkan would like to do something on this - the question is, where will funding come from?]

Finally, we have a sad post script to this article.  The mother of Kalkan Mayor, Saim Karakurt, died this weekend, aged 85.  Our sincere condolenses go to him and his family.  Allah rahmet eylesin.
