Esen riverYesterday, Kalkan Turkish Local News reported on storm damage in Kalkan, as torrential rain and gale force winds battered the coastline.

Today, we bring you details of the impact in the towns and villages close to Kalkan.

The damage is significant, and a huge clean up operation is underway, as villagers wait for the flood waters to subside.

Kaş stormKaş
In Kaş, three boats succumbed to the huge waves crashing over the breakwater. Other boats were damaged and many coastline shops and businesses were flooded.

Many boat owners turned out in the stormy weather to protect their property, as best they could.

In the photo (left), you can see a couple of street lights down at the harbour, that were blown over by the strong winds.

Patara stormPatara
The village of Patara (Gelemi
ş) suffered the wrath of the storm.

The wooden huts at the end of Patara beach, where you can hire sunbeds, are all but destroyed.

Tables and chairs were torn from their storage areas, and dragged out to sea.

The Muhtar of Patara, Arif Otlu, is reported as saying that the damage may cost up to 150,000 TL to repair.

River EsenRiver Esen
Persistent rainfall, over the previous 48 hours caused the River Esen to burst its banks. This is the river that emerges on Patara beach, not far from Letoon - a popular picnic spot.

Many villages between Kalkan and Fethiye have experienced flooding, and there is widescale damage to greenhouses.

The villages of Çukurincir, Eşen and Kumluova are badly affected, with local officials reported as saying that damage will run into millions of lira.

In Çukurincir, flood water of 3 metres has been reported, and 600 acres of greenhouses are waterlogged.

Canan AkbaşKTLN spoke to Canan Akbaş, the Agricultural Manager with Deniz Bank in Kalkan. The majority of local farmers bank with Deniz Bank.

Canan told us that fortunately, the local villages of Kınık, Ova and Yeşilköy suffered only minor damage. The villages just across the border,in Muğla region have been more badly affected.

Canan has been busy dealing with insurance claims from her farmer customers. Agricultural insurance is expensive, and it is estimated that only around one in ten farmers bother to take it out.

Update: In yesterday's KTLN news article, we reported winds of up to 109 mph.  This was the information relayed to us from the Coast Guard (Sahil Güvenlik).  It has subsequently been pointed out to us that this wind speed is highly unlikely, and we believe the gusts may have been 109 kilometres per hour.  Apologies for this error.  Perhaps we lost something in translation.  Whatever it was, it was exceptionally windy!
