In this one, we address the question of crime in Kalkan - or more specifically, something that could be done to maybe increase the chances of catching criminals - and mainly, we are talking about burglars. The Jandarma believe that CCTV cameras placed in strategic locations, may act as a deterrent to criminals and, in some cases, assist in apprehending them. They are not a panacea - indeed, there is no quick fix that can eradicate this problem, but the Jandarma see this as another tool in their armoury. They know from recent incidents that some burglars must have had a vehicle to remove stolen items. If CCTV cameras on key roads in and out of Kalkan, can capture a number plate, they have a positive lead they can follow up. For information, Kalkan did introduce CCTV cameras a few years ago, however they were poor quality, and were never effective. Now, they just don't work. Since that abortive attempt, technology has moved on, and there are examples on the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts, where cameras have been professionally installed, and are working well. Kalkan is once more considering introducing CCTV, with lessons learned, and expert advice being sought. So our question to KTLN readers is, what do you think about the idea of CCTV cameras around Kalkan? And if funding is an issue, would you be prepared to make a modest contribution to the Belediye - let's say 20TL per annum per property? Which of the following statements best reflects your view on CCTV, which would be operated and monitored by the Jandarma? Yes - great idea, and happy to pay a little. Yes - great idea, but not willing to pay. Not sure either way. Don't know. No - I don't think they will help. No - I object in principle to cameras. Other (Please contact us to explain your view). For information, when you click on the poll results page, you will see a drop down box, where you can select and view results from all KTLN polls. Last month's poll was about whether all property in Kalkan should be painted white. The Kaş Belediye recently introduced a rule to this effect. The poll split you right down the middle. Over 330 people voted. Just under half of you, (49%), think Kalkan should be multi-coloured, i.e. anything goes, whilst 47% believe Kalkan should revert to how it pretty much used to be, many years ago - all white. The remaining 4% were not sure either way. KTLN - your window on Kalkan Turkey. Katie-Ellen |
