1. Visitor demographics - a profile of foreigners in Kalkan

Although we believe our survey sample is probably representative of most non-Turkish visitors to Kalkan, the following numbers and percentages relate to our survey sample only.  In our analysis, we may extrapolate the data where we believe it makes sense.

Remember that each of our 406 respondents represents a household or group of people.  We therefore estimate the total number represented is over 1,200 people. 

We hope you have fun pouring over the results of the survey.  Please note that where available, we sometimes show comparable figures for the previous year, in brackets.

1.1 How many years have you been coming to Kalkan?

The majority of people have been coming to Kalkan for many years, which confirms how much of a hold the place has on people. 

First timers only make up 8% (prior year 12%) of respondents.  

 

1.2 When were you last in Kalkan?

Only around 6% of respondents had not been to Kalkan during the last 12 months.  This means that views expressed in this survey are given with the benefit of recent experience.

Around half of our respondents walk, despite the hills. Just under a third rent a vehicle. This reflects what was said in last year's survey.

Just under half of residents have their own transport (car or scooter).

Over one third of visitors go for the town centre, 14% go to Kalamar, 17% are in Kızıltaş, and 10% in Ortaalan.

 

1.9 When in Kalkan, typically, how many people in total, are in your group/household?

56% of visitors are couples, 18% travel in a group of 4, and 8% in a group of 3. Single travellers make up just 6% of visitors.

It appears that Kalkan really started to become a place to come and live, in the last decade, and not much before.  Some 87% of foreign residents started living here within the last 10 years.
