In 2010, just over 61% of adults in Turkey declared they were happy, compared to only 54% in 2009. And 11% said they were unhappy in 2010, compared to 15% in the previous year. In fact, if you look at the statistics going back a few years, you can see that happiness levels dipped in 2008 and 2009, and they are now back at 2007 levels. The current position is also not too far away from 2003 percentages, when this survey was first done.
Another interesting finding, although perhaps not surprising, is the fact that as the education level increases, so does the level of happiness. One significant difference was the happiness rating of married and single people in Turkey. In 2010, 64% of people who were married, said they were happy, compared to only 54% of single people. The TurkStat survey is carried out in November of each year through face to face interviews with individuals aged 18 years and over, in sample households. The 2010 Life Satisfaction Survey was carried out in 3,440 households where 7,027 individuals were interviewed face to face. The KTLN survey had a more modest sample size (406), however, in market research terms, it is a statistically significant sample, for a place the size of Kalkan. We found that a whopping 96% of respondents were either satisfied or very satisfied with their overall experience of Kalkan, which we interpret as an overwhelming sign of happiness. From April 2011, the UK Office of National Statistics is to start measuring happiness. Let's hope they record the first names of everyone who is asked, because it will be intersting to see if Larry is really as happy as they say. KTLN - your window on Kalkan Turkey. Katie-Ellen |

Hot on the heels of the Kalkan Turkish Local News annual survey, we have news of a national happiness survey, conducted by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat).
According to the analysis, Turkish women are happier than Turkish men, with figures of 62.7% and 59.6% respectively.
