Between February 1915 and January 1916, the joint forces of the British Empire and France, tried to sieze the Ottoman capital Constantinople, now called Istanbul. The military campaign ended in failure, with heavy losses on both sides. A significant naval battle took place on 18th March 1915, when a combined British and French force of 18 battleships, made an all out attack. However, they underestimated the Ottoman navy, and suffering heavy losses, they withdrew. This was a major victory for the Ottomans, and is a day that is still remembered in modern day Turkey. If you are in Kalkan right now, you may like to know that Kalkan First School will be remembering The Çanakkale naval victory, this Monday 21st March, (rescheduled from Friday 18th March, due to inclement weather), with a ceremony in the amphitheatre, (subject to the weather being fine). There will be some speeches, singing, and a slide show.Everyone is invited, so why not come along and experience the Turkish community celebrating their history. The proceedings start at 10am, and will last no longer than an hour. KTLN readers may like to know that the school will be making use of a brand new computer and projector that has just been funded by The KTLN Trust. So if you have ever made a donation, you can allow yourself a smile, in the knowledge that your money has been well spent. On behalf of the school, we would like to thank everyone who has made a donation. Below: A scene from the naval battle.
