Kalkan BayArticle Updated: Here is our second report on what is new in Kalkan for 2011. In our first article, we focussed on food and drink establishments.  Following your feedback, we updated a few items.

In this report we pull together all the other things we are aware of, including tour and travel companies, retail shops and services.

We hope you find it useful, and as ever, please let us have your feedback, if we have made a mistake.

If you know of any other changes for the 2011 season, please let us know, as we shall probably have at least one more article to come, in this series.

Activities
Captain Osman has sold
Yıldız 1, and this season he and his brother Adem, will be sailing Yıldız 2 and a new boat, Yıldız 3. The new boat is roughly the same size as Yıldız 2, with a similar capacity.

Banks
Nothing significant to report, except that both İş Bank and Ziraat Bank, have had new entrances built to their offices.  Don't forget that last year, Deniz Bank and Akbank installed two new standalone ATMs in town.

Retail shops and services
Aci Muhendislik Hizmetleri
, the small electrical shop between the Corner Restaurant and Kalkan Kirtasiye stationers, has closed. It is set to become a cafe/lokanta, serving pides and kebabs.

As we reported in our first What's New article, the Anadolu Can Carpets, which was under Sofra restaurant has closed. This space is now a ground floor extension to the Sofra restaurant.

Opposite Şeyma's Spices, the Blanc du Nil shop that opened last season has closed. The premises are set to become another gift shop.

Çağla TekelÇağla Tekel store, close to Elibol Likya Photo shop, has taken over the next door unit where Stocker fashion shop was located. The shop, which sells alcohol, turkish delight, nuts and other snack foods, is extending so that it can offer a wider selection of goods - mostly wines and spirits.

A new property company is in town, called Dikey Emlak. It is above what used to be the Ilban restaurant (from 2009), opposite Parc Kalkan. Looking at their website, (in Turkish only), they specialise in land sales and landscaping.

Şahin (aka Eagle) from the Jeans shop, and Sedat, who previously worked at Infinity jewellery shop, are joining together to open a new jewellery shop, right next to the Deniz Bank ATM in the town centre, (on Hasan Altan Caddesi). The shop name is not yet known.

Kalkan Elektronik, provider of digital TV systems, on Gül Sokak (not far from İş Bank), now incorporates computer services business, Data Bilgisayar. It has changed its name to Kalkan Electronic & Computer Systems.

Kalkan HorizonKalkan Horizon (property services), has moved from the street where Sofra and Iso's restaurants are located, to be neighbours with Express Travel, on Kalamar Road.

Kalkan Exclusive Properties is on the move. It has relocated from its position near to Baykush gift shop, and
Şeyma's Spices, to a point underneath Küçük Ev lokanta, and opposite Baharat restaurant.

A new design and computer services company has been established, which is trading from a shop next door to Termessos Travel, (near Ziraat Bank). It is called Kalkan Design & Computers.

Karadeniz BakeryThe Karadeniz Bakery has recently opened on the road up to Akbel, with speciality bread (Black Sea recipes), baked in a stone oven. It is on the right side of the road as you head towards Akbel. It has an amazing range of breads.

We are aware of rumours in Kalkan that a new Migros supermarket is coming along.  We can say with some certainty that you won't see Migros in Kalkan this year.

Somunahmetler (Profilo & Tefal) was an electrical shop between Kalkan Kirtasiye stationers and the Kalkan Tobacco & Wine shop, just down from Parc Kalkan. It is currently being refurbished. The Sezekler Kasap (butchers) shop is relocating here, from its present position on the town centre roundabout, just round the corner from the Tedaş office.

Teskom supermarket, on Kalamar Road is due to reopen on 1st April. We should point out that Can Can supermarket, was open all winter, and remains the only other store down the Kalamar end of town.

And finally in this section, we can tell you that a brand new building is being built on what was unused land, adjacent to the Swan Pub.  Construction is ongoing, but once finished, we are told that it is planned to have offices, plus a rooftop restaurant.  See photo below.

Tour Operators
The tour operators landscape has changed a bit this year. Here is our take on the movers and shakers.

Likya ResidenceThe most obvious change this year in Kalkan, is the fact that the owner of the Aykan Group of hotels, (Asfiya, Lykia Residence, Oasis, Yalı Beach), is no longer using Travelzest (a group that includes the Tapestry Collection) to market their holidays.

Instead, the Aykan Group has developed its own website, as well as using a few other travel companies.

Travelzest/Tapestry Collection have cancelled client's bookings offering an alternative or a full refund.  They still operate in Kalkan, promoting the Patara Prince, Kulube, Fıdanka and Kalamar hotels.

Meanwhile, some of the people from Tapestry Collection have decided to set up a travel company of their own, called Discerning Collection. Their website is not fully developed yet, however it does already show the four Aykan Group hotels in Kalkan.

The Turquoise Collection website shows just two hotels in Kalkan - the Likya Residence & the Asfiya.

Exclusive Escapes continue to offer the Kalkan Regency and the Villa Mahal.

The Anatolian Sky Holidays company still offers the Rhapsody, Elixir, Oasis and Kalamar hotels, on its website.

Simpson Travel is relatively new in Turkey, and last year was their first big year in this area. This year they have the Mediteran hotel and the new Korsan Suites in their portfolio.  A nice touch on their website, is a brief welcome video, by the founder of the business, Graham Simpson.

Tourism & Travel Companies
The established Fethiye tour agency, Karaçay Tourism, is opening a new branch in the old town in Kalkan, with a trading name of ‘Exclusive Kalkan’. The new office is opposite the Ottoman House restaurant. They will provide airport transfers, car hire, boat charters, excursions and jeep safaris. Please note, the company is not connected to Exclusive Escapes.

Volume TravelVolume Travel has moved up the hill. Last year it was at the bottom of Hasan Altan Caddesi, opposite Terrazzo restaurat. It is now opposite the Kalamaki restaurant, which was formerly the summer office of Natural Estates.

Following on from International Women's Day on 8th March, we can announce that Kalkan has its very first woman taxi driver. We wish Nezihat well in her new job.

The KTLN Business Directory
Finally, just a word about the KTLN Business Directory. We are committed to maintaining this online resource as the most comprehensive and up to date directory you can find.

We are working over the coming weeks to reflect all the changes we have told you about.  If you spot an error or omission, we would very much welcome your feedback. We promise to correct and update entries promptly.
