For example, we have 'Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day', (31st January, in case you missed that one), or coming up, the ever popular, 'National Hairball Awareness Day', on the last Friday in April. So we find it refreshing, and somehow reassuring to know that in Turkey, they have a day to celebrate something that really is worth caring about - the trees and forests. Strictly speaking, Forest Day is on Monday 21st March, but across Turkey you will find all sorts of celebrations going on this week - Forest Week, (Orman Haftası). In our area, the Forestry Department chose Wednesday 23rd March as the day on which local children should get out into the countryside near Yeşilköy, have fun, and plant some trees.KTLN went along to join in the fun. We hope you enjoy our photos from the day. Below: One of the new forestry department trucks, with a few trees to be planted, in the foreground.
Below: School children make their way from Yeşilköy school, to the woodland area, on the outskirts of town.
Below: A forestry worker, all set to plant a tree.
Below: The tranquil woodland area in between Yeşilköy and Akbel.
Below: Time for a picnic. Not a chicken nugget in sight!
Below: Local schoolgirls skipping. Out of shot, schoolboys kick a football. We didn't spot a single child playing with an electronic game. Just good healthy fun, and the sound of laughter.
Below: All dressed up for the occasion.
Below: Peek a boo!
Below: Do you get the impression they are having a good time?
Below: Hey! Who nicked my binoculars!

We all live in modern times, where those clever people from the world of marketing, think up all kinds of inane things for us to celebrate.
