Water cuts confirmed for Kışla and Kömürlük PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 30 March 2011
ShareBowsersFurther to the KTLN report on Monday, we bring you the latest position on the looming water cuts to the areas of Kışla and Kömürlük.

There is some confusion as to when the cuts will start, and how long they will last.

In this report, we try to bring some clarity, and tell you about KTLN's appeal to the Ministry of Tourism in Antalya.

Why this second serious cut?
At the end of April 2010, the same areas suffered prolonged cuts, when the water pipes were replaced on the D400 road, close to the petrol station.

These latest cuts are to allow the pipes to be switched over in another stretch of road, close to the Luka restaurant.

When will the cuts start?
KTLN spoke to the Belediye today. The road contractors plan to cut the water supply feeding Kışla and Kö
mürlük late on Sunday 3rd April. Given that it will take time for water in the pipes to flow out, users may find the water pressure falls on Sunday, with the supply drying up on Monday 4th April. The timing depends on overall demand for water from these areas.

How long will the cuts last?
The Belediye has been announcing that water may be off for up to one month. This time period includes a significant buffer, in case they hit problems, such as bad weather. We are told that if no problems are encountered, and all goes well, the cuts may be for as little as 10 days.

Why does the switchover take so long?
This is a question we asked, but we have not had a definitive answer.
We can only speculate that there may be multiple branch pipes that need to be connected and welded to the main pipe.

Why can't a temporary bypass be put in place to maintain a supply whilst the work is done?
Another question we asked. Again, we do not have an official answer. Perhaps it comes down to time and money - or lack of it.

Is this definitely happening?
We would say that it is 99% certain to happen. The road contractors must have everything finished by 4th May 2011, if they are to avoid financial penalties.

KTLN has raised the matter with the Ministry of Tourism in Antalya, using the Alo 179 service, as it is something that will reflect badly on Kalkan, and Antalya region, as a tourist destination. But in fact, we have stressed that this is not simply a tourist issue - there are many Turkish residents who will be affected, as well as long term foreign residents.

We have asked the two specific questions above: Why will it take so long? And if the water must be off for so long, why isn't a temporary bypass in place?

With just a few days to go, we are not confident that a solution will be found to avoid such a prolonged water cut. But nevertheless, we have asked. If we get any positive news, we will let you know.

What do we do for water during the cut?
Before the cut comes into effect, the advice is to do as many jobs as you can that consume water, such as watering your garden, cleaning outdoor terraces, and preparing your pool, if you are planning to use it in April.

After the cut, if you require a bulk delivery of water, the Belediye has confirmed that it will provide free deliveries. You will need to go to the Belediye and get your order in.

Do bear in mind that the Belediye only has a limited number of bowsers, (the fire engines), so it may be impossible to meet all demand.  If you need an alternative supplier, you can find a couple of bowsers in our Business Directory, but you will have to pay.
