Traffic has been diverted today, as the main road through town has been blocked, in front of the Teskom supermarket. The impact of these roadworks is likely to be felt for days to come.Trenches have been dug from a point beyond Adda supermarket, and down, all the way past Smile supermarket, and up to Teskom supermarket. There is also a trench opposite the Corner restaurant, in front of Mavi Boncuk gift shop, and up the side road near Oz Adana. Most of the new high voltage cable has now been laid. It is claimed that the holes will be filled in 2 or 3 days, however we suspect it will take several days to relay all the bricks, and achieve anything like a smooth road surface. Over the coming days, there will be significantly less on-road parking available, and great care is required accessing shops and offices, adjacent to the roadworks. We spoke to a number of locals yesterday, who expressed their concerns at the timing of this work, just as many people are getting ready for the tourist season. The Belediye told us that they have no say on when the Tedaş do this kind of work. On the positive side, the new cables will result in a more reliable electricity supply to the town, making power outages a less frequent occurrence, especially in stormy weather. And eventually, the streets will look tidier. The more eagle-eyed amongst you will have noticed that already, some of the overhead power lines have been taken down. Later, it will be good to see the redundant metal poles disappear. Below: Looking down Şehitler Caddesi, towards the town centre, and Adda supermarket.
Below: In front of Brave Tours. You can see the new red cables in the trench.
Below: Bulent's Bridge. A temporary structure to allow customers access to the shops. Bulent, the butcher, was happy to confirm there is no toll charge to get across. It won't cost you a thing. Not a sausage.
Below: In front of Teskom supermarket. No through road.
Below: The trench extends past Oz Adana, towards Ortaokul Caddesi.
Below: Roadworks along the first 100 metres of Kalamar Road.
Below: Just out of town, on the new D400, footings are in place for new street lights. Note the absence of overhead cables.
