Kalkan Make a Difference DayArticle updated: KTLN recently told you about Kalkan Make A Difference Day (MAD), coming up on Wednesday 13th April.

There was a final planning meeting at the Belediye this morning, and we can now tell you exactly what is happening, so that as many of you as possible can join in.

This is an opportunity to join in a social event, where we all get out on to the streets of Kalkan to tidy things up, ending up with a bit of a party behind the town beach, at the Pinar Büfe cafe.

KTLN has called it Make a Difference Day, because that's exactly what it is, however you will soon see posters around Kalkan, in Turkish, for the Temizlik ve Bahar Şenliği (Spring Cleaning Festival). It's the same thing. See the image below.

Volunteers are invited to meet up between 09.00 and 09.30 outside Kalkan First School. The idea is to form working groups that will fan out across town, picking up litter, and tidying things up, before eventually converging behind the town beach.

There is also an option to start closer to your own home, if you would like to Make a Difference in your own street. You can still make your way along to the party at the Pinar Büfe cafe. Talk to your neighbours and ask them to join you

Taking part will be residents and visitors; Turkish and non-Turkish people; adults and children.

There will be 450 children from Kalkan First School; 250 children walking all the way down from Akbel school, plus 79 students from Kalkan's high school.

The Belediye has obtained gloves and plastic bags, but you can use your own if you prefer.

You can either drop off the bags of litter at our final meeting point, or drop them into any of the Belediye litter bins you pass en route.

The cafe behind the town beach should be geared up for your arrival, any time from 10.45 onwards, and they will provide free food (probably sandwiches), and soft drinks for all MAD volunteers. There will also be singing from the teachers/pupils. The party should last a couple of hours.

If you are driving a car or riding a scooter around town on Wednesday, please take extra care, as there will be lots of pedestrians about, including many children.

You may like to know that as we get to work on the streets, a number of volunteer divers, organised by Altın, of the Kalkan Diving Centre, will be cleaning areas of the sea bed in Kalkan Bay. You may be able to spot them working from the beach.

This is a real opportunity for the people of Kalkan to work together, as a community. Why not be a part of it? We hope to see you on Wednesday morning.

All we need now is some good weather!
