Recovered stolen itemsNews has emerged of the arrest last week in Kalkan, of a couple of professional thieves.

The pair, from Istanbul, had travelled down the Aegean coast, and round the Mediterranean coast, past Antalya, and on to Alanya.

They were on their way back when they made their ill-fated decision to stop off in Kalkan.

On Thursday 31st March, they stole Champagne valued at 300TL from the
Yalı store on Şehitler Caddesi. This was a fatal miscalculation, as the store is bristling with CCTV cameras.

Staff alerted the Jandarma, who quickly circulated images of Ahmet Ersen Yiğin (38) [below left], and his accomplice İrem Kuzu (35) [below right], to various people around town.

The following day, Friday, a local businessman, whose name we prefer to withold, spotted the pair in town and alerted the Jandarma. They duly attended, at which point the pair attempted to make off in a car.

At this point, your enjoyment of this KTLN report will be greatly enhanced, if you can hum the theme tune to Starsky & Hutch in your head.

Cue Kalkan Jandarma Chief, Yunus Emre Demipehliven, who steered his car across the road to block their escape, and promptly nabbed the less than dynamic duo.

Their car was a veritable treasure trove of booty, including 5.5 kilos of silver jewellery, valued at 40,000TL, plus a significant amount of cash. The male thief was found to be wearing a jacket that had extra hidden pockets stitched on the inside. See photo below.

These Champagne Charlies were taken to the Jandarma station, where they were treated to bed and breakfast, followed by a court appearance.

They pleaded guilty to a number of offences, including stealing jewellery in Alanya, Manavgat and Kemer, (but not Kalkan).

Ahmet Ersen Yiğin was also found to possess fake ID, which is regarded as a very serious offence in Turkey. The pair are no strangers to prison, and they are now, once more behind bars.

Kalkan may be a sleepy town on the Turkish Riviera, but this pair clearly underestimated the locals.

We find it interesting that CCTV cameras were instrumental in these arrests.  Let's hope that this is noted by PATAB, who are tasked with organising a project to bring security cameras to Kalkan. See our recent article on this: Crime prevention update
