Tourism Week - 15th to 22nd April 2011 PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 11 April 2011
ShareTourism in TurkeyArticle updated 20th April: Kaş and Kalkan will be promoting this beautiful part of the Turquoise Coast, in Tourism Week, starting on Friday 15th April.

In this article, KTLN brings you news of what will be happening, during this week, and also a few other things taking place in the month of April.

Please note that this article includes details of some changes to planned events, which we initially reported in a local news article dated 3rd February 2011.

Wednesday 13th April: Kalkan Make a Difference Day (aka Temizlik ve Bahar Şenliği)
An opportunity to join in a community event where we all get out on to the streets of Kalkan to tidy things up. Read this article for more details: KTLN MAD news article

You may like to know that whilst some of us are cleaning the streets, Altın, from Kalkan Diving Centre is organising an underwater clean up, in the Kalkan Bay area. If you are an experienced diver, and would like to help, why not get in touch with him.

Friday 15th April: Launch of Tourism Week
The official launch takes place in Kaş,
with a procession, starting at 17.30, walking from outside Migros supermarket, down to Republic Square, (where the statue of Atatürk is located).

There will be a ceremony, with local dignitaries, which will incorporate singing, poetry reading, traditional folk dancing, and a local handicraft exhibition. The last boat on the harbour side, will be hoisted back into the sea, ready for the tourist season.

At 19.00 the Belediye have arranged for food to be served, and at 20.00 there will be a music concert, featuring local artists.

Please note, that in earlier KTLN reports, this date was originally advised as the official opening of Kaş marina.  However, this is now expected to take place some time in May - exact date to be confirmed.

Saturday 16th April: Delikkemer to Patara nomadic walk and picnic
This is a fantastic day out, (starting at 10.00 and lasting perhaps 3 hours or so), and it's all free.

Organised by the people of Patara, you are invited to take part in the walk from Delikkemer to Patara. At the half way point, (Tavas), there is a free picnic meal, accompanied by traditional music and dancing. Then it's on to Patara village (Gelemiş), for more singing and dancing. Watch out for more details, coming soon on KTLN.

Also on Saturday 16th April: In the evening the Yeşilköy Halk Tiyatrosu, (Yeşilköy People's Theatre), will be performing a play at the antique theatre in Kaş. The performance (free), starts at 20.30.

Monday 18th April: The divers of Kaş will be having an underwater cleaning day.

And at 16.00 in the Kaş Belediye conference room, there will be a public meeting about local tourism. It is expected that the governor of Kaş area will be there, along with the Mayor of Kaş, and the local tourism manager. If you have any questions for them, or would like to join the meeting, feel free to go along.

Finally on Monday, at 18.00 at Akçagerme Beach, Kaş, there will be a free music concert, put on by local students. This beach is set in a natural bay, on one of the final bends, before you reach Kaş.

It is managed by students of tourism, and has some great facilities, including playgrounds, water slides and platforms in the sea.

Tuesday 19th April: We understand that this is the day that the boats will return to the water, in Kalkan harbour.

Saturday 23rd April: National Sovereignty & Children's Day
There will be a few celebrations going on in Kalkan. We are awaiting full details.

Please note that the morning walk to Delikkemer, and the concert in the evening are not happening now.  We think there may be something else planned instead, but no details are currently available.

By the way, Saturday 23rd April is also St George's Day.

This had been the day on which the renovated parliament building in Patara was to be officially opened, with VIPs flying in from all over the world. Unfortunately, the renovations are behind schedule, and the ceremony has been postponed. We await confirmation of a new date, but there is speculation that it may be on Republic Day - 29th October 2011.

Sunday 24th April: KAPSA fundraising event. Starting at Kleo Bar, and possibly spreading to Seaport restaurant, at 11am.

Friday 29th April: The Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey - Stage 6 arrives in Kalkan.
We believe that the cyclists will arrive in Kalkan between14.00 and 15.00, but this is not yet confirmed.

If this time is correct, then there will be a bit of a clash with the Royal Wedding, which kicks off at 13.00 Turkish time (11.00 UK time). The wedding of Prince William and Katherine Middleton, will be shown on many TV screens in bars around Kalkan.
