In Iceland, the Grimsvotn volcano began erupting on Saturday, spewing huge clouds of ash into the atmosphere, in scenes reminiscent of April 2010. Just over a year ago, travel chaos ensued, as hundreds of flights were cancelled, leaving thousands of travelers stranded. What can we expect this time round? Experts in the Met Office, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and National Air Traffic Services (NATS), are trying to estimate the size of the problem, but already flights in the northern parts of the UK have been cancelled. If you are traveling over the coming days, you should keep watching the news, and checking the NATS website, which has a dedicated volcano update page. If you think your flight may be affected, you should contact your airline. Kalkan Turkish Local News has a link on our home page, to the National Air Traffic Services (NATS) website, providing the latest news. And here is a link to a BBC News online report on the subject: BBC News Report You can also see live radar images of flights over Europe (including Turkey), which also show the extent of the ash cloud, at Flightradar24.com.

People in the UK who have got flights booked over the coming week or so, must be holding their breath to see which way the wind blows.
