ATM scam makes an unwelcome return to Kalkan PDF Print E-mail

AkbankIn July 2009, and July 2010, Kalkan Turkish Local News reported about ATM scams.  Well, look out, because the crooks have returned.

We have learned about an incident on Saturday 28th May, at Akbank, where strangers loitering by the ATM 'offered to help' someone who was trying to withdraw cash.

This time, the scam involved placing a device over the card slot and then momentarily distracting the customer, whilst an accomplice noted the PIN, which was displayed on screen.

The customer's card was retained by the machine and because it was a weekend they could not go into the branch to get help.  They were unaware that money had been taken from their account until they were back in the UK.

If you see anyone loitering around an ATM, please take care if they offer to help you.  Be especially careful if it is outside bank opening hours.

If their behaviour makes you suspicious, don't hesitate to report details to the Jandarma - possibly through a known, trusted Turkish friend.  The phone number for Kalkan Jandarma is 0242 844 3005.

Please note that whilst last week's incident was at the Akbank ATM, this kind of scam can happen at any bank, or even a standalone machine, (there are a couple in Kalkan town centre).
