Lunar eclipse over Kalkan

If you believe what you read, Herodotus, the 5th century Greek historian came to Kalkan.  He is reported to have said that Kalkan was the nearest place on earth to the stars.

So what better place to watch last night's lunar eclipse.

In this report we bring you some excellent images of this rare celestial event, from Kalkan photographer Devrim Çelebi.

The moon didn't rise above the mountains behind Kalkan until about 10 pm, but once it appeared, we didn't have too long to wait for the Earth's shadow to start nibbling away at the left side of the moon.

Devrim stayed up into the small hours to take the following sequence, and we thank her for allowing Kalkan Turkish Local News to publish them.

Please respect Devrim's copyright, and do not copy these images.
