Kalkan roads update May 2009 PDF Print E-mail

Kalkan Turkish Local News has got an update for you on planned road development in Kalkan.

In this article we tell you about the plans for Kaş Road, (the D400), the changes to the road up to Akbel, a new dual carriageway into town and news of roads in Kızıltaş.

Before you read on it is important for us to make two points.  Firstly, this article does not speculate on the timing of any planned work.  Nothing is certain, and we know from previous experience that work may not be completed on schedule.

The second point to make is that our report is based upon plans we have seen, and whilst they reflect the latest position, plans can and do change.  In fact you will see that the Belediye is trying to make changes to the current plans.

Kaş/Fethiye Road (D400)
This is a national road, and as such is funded and managed from Ankara rather than locally.  Several months ago, work on this road stopped close to the bus station exit on to Kaş Road, although a trench for a drainage pipe has been dug further along the road past the Jandarma.

Eventually this 40 metre wide dual carriageway will continue to a point beyond the current Kışla turn off.  When completed, the road will include a split level section where the existing road will become the Kaş bound carriageway, and there will be a new elevated road for traffic coming from Kaş.

Importantly, the current plans show no entrances or exits whatsoever between the main junction (with traffic lights) and the end of the new road, beyond Kışla.  Existing junctions with Kaş Road will no longer be available.  Let's look at what that means in a bit more detail.

The current exit for Kışla will go.  Residents of Kışla will know how dangerous it is to turn off the main D400 road if you are travelling from Kaş, so maybe it's not a bad thing.  Instead, there will be a new local road built, Kışla Caddesi, that runs parallel to the D400, (on the coast side, rather than the mountain side).  The first part of this road already exists - it is the small road just down from Luka restaurant, opposite the Adda Group office.  At the moment it only runs for a few hundred metres, but it will eventually extend all the way to Kışla, and will be the main route to that part of town.

Next we come to the current exit by Luka restaurant, which takes you into town (Şehitler Caddesi).  There is currently an outstanding problem here because the government plans show no access into town, and the Kalkan Belediye wants traffic coming from Kaş to be able to come into town at this point, rather than have to drive all the way to the main junction.  Kalkan architects Eylül Tasarım have been asked to help find a workable solution, and will be advising the Belediye on a potential junction layout.

The various roads leading up the mountain to Kızıltaş will go.  Some have already disappeared, such as the road that went past Samira Deluxe, but when the new dual carriageway is completed all of them will go.  So how are residents to get to their homes, and how will tourists get to places such as Mediteran apartments, Samira Deluxe, Bella Monte and other hotels?

There will be an additional small road built at the main D400 junction, which will pass to the right of the Arçelik shop.  It will follow the existing concrete water gulley and will eventually connect up with Vatan Caddesi.  Some local people already use this route as a walkway, but the creation of a proper road will provide access for vehicles.

Vatan Caddesi already joins the existing road to Akbel (Kadife Sokak) and this access point will remain.

KTLN understands that the existing exit from the bus station on to Kaş Road will no longer be available and buses will have to come and go via the entrance on the road coming into Kalkan, Şehitler Caddesi.

What about pedestrians?  The plans show that there will be a footpath on the coast/Kalkan side of the new road.  There will be a safe crossing point close to Luka restaurant - we believe it will be some kind of pedestrian walkway over the road, but this is unconfirmed.  It is not clear whether there will be other marked crossings.  We will try to find out more on this, as clearly people will want safe options for crossing the road.

KTLN will keep you posted on developments.

The road to Akbel (Kadife Sokak)
In an earlier local news article we said that there would be a new road to Akbel.  We have now seen the plans, and in fact the existing road will largely remain in place, however there will be some changes to the road layout, notably close to the Kandil electrical shop.  These changes will impact on the roadside children's playground.  It is thought that the equipment from this playground will be relocated, as it will not be an appropriate place to have such a facility.

In addition to the existing road, the plans show a new 15 metre wide road which carries straight on, where currently the road bends sharply to the right (going up the hill).  Please see below for details of a plan/map of Kalkan which shows the planned changes.

New dual carriageway from the main junction into town
You may have noticed work going on between the main junction with the D400, down Şehitler Caddesi, towards Ziraat Bank.  This stretch of road is to become a dual carriageway.  Traffic leaving town and heading for the D400 Fethiye/Kaş road will drive along the existing road.  Traffic coming down into town will drive on a new piece of road which will pass in front of Yüksel Home Collection shop.  The plans show that there will be a refuge in between the two carriageways.  They also show that there will be a roundabout where Şehitler Caddesi joins Karayolları Sokak (where the Thursday market is).

Roads in Kızıltaş
Many roads in the Kalkan area have been improved over recent months, however much of the Kızıltaş area has remained untouched.  The Belediye is to ensure that the main roads through this part of Kalkan are improved in the coming year.  As mentioned above, eventually the main entrance/exit for the Kızıltaş area will be at the main D400 junction.

Kalkan town plans
Kalkan Turkish Local News has published copies of the local plans for the whole of Kalkan, which show, amongst other things, the proposed road layout for the town (including the Kışla area).  All KTLN members can view these plans in the Knowledge Bank, in the Property section.

The plans we have published include one which shows the planned changes to the road to Akbel (final map on the page).  However, please note that the planned new road by the Arçelik shop, mentioned above, is not yet shown on the plan.  If you are a KTLN member, click here to go straight to the plans: Kalkan Town Plans
