The site is easy to navigate, has a wealth of information, and is everything I like to see in a website.  Any questions I could have asked, already had clear answers on KTLN.  The webcams were an added bonus.

RamazanRamazan - a period of fasting, during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, occurs in Turkey this year between Monday 1st August and Monday 29th August.

During Ramazan, devout followers of Islam will not eat or drink between sunrise and sunset.

It will be especially hard this year, as it falls in the hottest month of the year.

It all begins at sunset on the previous day - Sunday 31st July.  The dates may vary from country to country depending on whether the moon has been sighted or not.

The final ten days of Ramazan are regarded as being especially important.  In particular the 27th night, which is referred to as the Night of Power, or the Night of Destiny.

On this night it is said that the prophet Muhammad received the first revelation of the Qur’an.  This year, it starts at sunset on Saturday 27th and ends on the evening of Sunday 28th August.

Ramazan is followed by a 3 day national holiday called Şeker Bayram - on Tuesday 30th & Wednesday 31st August and Thursday 1st September.

The first day of Şeker Bayram is known as Eid al-Fitr, (the breaking of the fast), when Muslims will gather to offer a prayer of thanks.  You can also expect to see people celebrating at this time.

As şeker means sugar, this particular holiday is marked by a feast of sweet things - it's especially nice for the children.

This contrasts with Kurban Bayrami, which will be celebrated in November, where sacrificial animals are slaughtered and the meat is distributed to poorer families.

The banks and other official offices will be closed for Şeker Bayram as follows:

  • Monday 29th close at lunch time (half day)
  • Tuesday 30th August closed
  • Wednesday 31st August closed
  • Thursday 1st September closed
  • Friday 2nd September re-open

Whilst it is called Ramazan in Turkey, you will hear it referred to as Ramadan in most other countries.  It's the same thing.
