Well, fast forward to 2011, and here in Kalkan, if you take your empty Efes beer bottles back to the shop, you get a handful of kuruş back. Seasoned Efes imbibers, will already know this. However, we want to tell you about a new local scheme to turn these odd kuruş, into lots of Turkish lira, for The KTLN Trust. KTLN has spoken to the big supermarkets in Kalkan, and the ones listed below have very kindly agreed to help us with a scheme, to turn your empty beer bottles into cash, which will go to good causes in Kalkan, and the surrounding villages.
Importantly, no cash changes hands. All you need to do is tell the check out person that you wish to make a donation to The KTLN Trust, and they will make a note of the number of beer bottles returned. It's as simple as that! Periodically, we will check with the supermarkets how much money has accrued, and that money will be donated to The KTLN Trust. You may notice signs in the windows of participating supermarkets. As this article is published, they are: * Kartin* Teskom * Yalı With your help and support, not only will this scheme raise valuable cash for local people, but it will also help the environment, because it encourages recycling. So if you are an Efes fan, (we suspect there may be quite a few of you out there), and you can afford to forgo some small change, please take your empties back, and give a bit back to those who need some help. We hope that all check out people have been told what is happening, but if you do encounter any problems, or they don't appear to know about this new scheme, please tell us, so we can follow up.We should point out that KTLN encourages responsible drinking. We wouldn't want you to tell your partner, or your friends that you are drinking more, purely for charitable reasons! Şerefe! Since The KTLN Trust was launched in May 2009, thanks to the generosity of Kalkan businesses, and KTLN readers, we have raised over 31,000TL. If you want to see how that money has been spent, click here: Donations Update Thank you to everyone who supports The KTLN Trust. When I was a youngster, living in't pit village, up in Yorkshire, I would take my Gomersals and Ben Shaws pop bottles back to the shop, and I would get a penny back on the bottle. Not one new pence, you understand, but an old fashioned, big penny.
