As an owner of a property in Kalkan, this site seemed an excellent way of keeping in touch, especially as for much of the year I am not able to be out there.

KAPSAThe Kalkan Association for the Protection of Street Animals, (KAPSA), held its annual general meeting at the Pirat Hotel, on Thursday 17th November 2011.

The meeting provided an opportunity to set out what the organisation has done over the last year, and there were the usual formalities of voting in a new management committee and audit committee.

Details of income and expenditure were provided, which we outline below.

The main activities over the last 12 months have been the winter feeding programme; neutering of cats and dogs; treatment of sick and injured animals; education of children; ongoing registration of dogs, and attempting to find homes for strays.

In order to pay for these activities, KAPSA has undertaken a number of successful fundraising activities, which supplement the donations made directly into its bank account, and the donation boxes in Kalkan town.

A few interesting points from the KAPSA activity report:

  • Last winter's feeding programme distributed 3.2 tonnes of dog food and 2.5 tonnes of cat food.
  • Some 70 dogs and 209 cats were neutered during the last 12 months.
  • The overall total of animals (cats and dogs), neutered by KAPSA, since it was founded in 2008 stands at 846.
  • The total number of dogs now registered in Kalkan is 120.  Turkish law says that all dogs should be registered.
  • All dogs neutered by KAPSA are vaccinated against rabies, photographed, tagged and registered.
  • Prior to the AGM, KAPSA had 56 full members, of which about two thirds are Turkish citizens.

Here is a summary of money received and money spent.  All figures are Turkish lira, unless otherwise stated.

N.B. The opening balance, plus income, and minus outgoings, does not equal the closing bank balance.  The difference of 596.80 is petty cash.

KAPSA's UK bank account received a total of £5,155.80, of which £3,455.80 is not included in the above figures, as it has not yet been transferred to Turkey.

If this amount was included (at an exchange rate of 2.8), the total income for the year would be just short of 56,000 TL.  As it is, the amount will be included in next year's figures.

Projections for the coming 12 months show a budgeted income of 61,300 TL, and planned expenditure of 61,700 TL.

For information, KAPSA income for the year ended November 2010 was approximately 35,000 TL.

You can find out more details on the KAPSA Facebook page.
