I find the most useful and interesting information is the Kalkan news.  I was particulary interested in the road improvement info.

Sponsored swim from Mouse Island – December update PDF Print E-mail

Mouse Island swimmersMouse Island swimmers, Chris and Joules, would like to thank everyone for their generosity.

The fundraising appeal for local man, Abdurahman Genç, has now closed and a total of 7,300 TL has been banked, exceeding the target of 7,000 TL.

Friends and family of the two swimmers have given handsomely, but also the people of Kalkan have been magnificent.

Donations totalling 2,185 TL were collected on the day of the swim, and this was bolstered by two generous, anonymous donations of 500 TL and 800 TL.

What happens next?
The money is currently in an interest bearing time deposit account.

Chris and Joules have met the family twice.  Abdurrahman's sister told them, "He is a new person, since you all visited.  For the first time since the accident, he is talking about the future, because he can now envisage that he has a future.”

Abdurrahman is being advised and assisted at every step by retired pharmacists Suna and Yusuf Adali, and also by an English physiotherapist, who retired to Kalkan. Thank goodness for retirement!

Suna has been in detailed negotiations with a specialist clinic in Izmir, which has agreed to work with Abdurrahman's budget.  They will remake the prosthetic limb and keep him for an expected ten days, for the necessary rehabilitation. He is expected to travel to Izmir in January.

We hope to be able to bring you a successful final chapter to this story, early in 2012.

In the meantime Chris and Joules wish everybody a Happy Christmas, and if you fancy joining them down at Kalkan beach for the New Year's Day swim, feel free to come along.  Just to be clear, they won't be swimming out to Mouse Island, on this occasion.
