Tricia, or to use her full title, Dr. Patricia Emptage B.A. (Hons.) PhD, was a senior lecturer in cultural anthropology at a British university, but has lived in Letoon since 2001. This book is a wonderful companion for anyone visiting the area between Fethiye and Kaş, including of course Kalkan. The book is in three parts - the history of Lycia, local places of interest and Tricia's insight into daily village life.I started the book at section three - day to day living in Letoon and surrounding areas. Even though I have heard some of the anecdotes before I laughed out loud on several occasions. If you want to get behind the glossy veneer of the tourist hotspots, this gives you the full monty. Then I read section two, which has some excellent advice on where to go, what to look out for and importantly, how to get there, by public transport, where possible. Finally, I read the history section, which is pitched at a level that I'm sure most readers will find sufficiently detailed. Because Tricia's specialism is in anthropology rather than pure history, she focuses more on people and their culture, and not simply the ancient buildings and monuments - magnificent though they may be. OK, so there are a few typos in there, but so what. This is a thoroughly well written book. Funny in parts, sometimes moving and packed with facts that you will remember long after you have put the book down. The Road to Ruins is by Tricia Emptage. Cost 25TL.
