Kalkan roads update - January 2012 PDF Print E-mail

Kalkan D400It's a while since we reported on Kalkan's roads, so let's have a bit of a catch up.

In this update we tell you about happenings on the D400, Fethiye to Kaş highway, as well as local roadworks.

But we begin this report with some good news for the residents of Kızıltaş, above the D400.

Crossing the D400
Lots of people in Kızıltaş have to cross the section of dual carriageway between the petrol station and the spot where Öz Adana ıs now located, (formerly Luka restaurant), in order to get into town.  A popular crossing point is close to the bus station exit.

However, some people have expressed concerns about having to walk across such a wide road, where traffic is travelling at speed.  There was talk of a foot-bridge, however this idea seemed to be put on the back burner.

Well, the good news is that it has now been confirmed by the Belediye that a foot-bridge is to be built across the road, so that pedestrians can traverse the D400 in safety.  This work is to be funded by central government, rather than coming out of the Belediye's budget.

The timing has not yet been finalised, but there is a chance it may be built this year.  When we hear more on timing, we will let you know.

Kalkan's Mayor, Saim Karakurt, has also been lobbying for a second foot-bridge to cross the D400 near to the other road into town, by Öz Adana.  Negotiations are ongoing.  Two foot-bridges would be fantastic, but at least one has now been confirmed.

Walking along the D400
And whilst on pedestrian related matters, we have more good news.  The highway agency is working on building a footpath along the D400.

It will stretch from the bus station exit, all the way to Kışla, and possibly a bit beyond.  Again, from a safety perspective, this has got to be seen as welcome news.

It is expected that the work will take 3 to 4 months to complete.

Local roads
Kalkan Belediye has just hired the equipment necessary, to start working on some local roads.  We don't have a full schedule of work to be done, but we believe high on the list are:

  • the dual carriageway into town, (passing Bim and soon to be Migros),
  • Vatan Caddesi in Kızıltaş, and
  • Kışla Caddesi (the service road from Kalkan to Kışla, running parallel to the D400).

We are informed that for safety reasons, workmen will also be building a wall between the D400 and the aforementioned service road, that runs below, and alongside, towards Kışla.

BimA word of caution
We mention above the planned dual carriageway that will pass by two new supermarkets - Bim and Migros.

Bim is on the corner of Şehitler Caddesi and Hurriyet Caddesi (the road to the school).

Since it opened, we have noticed how busy this corner junction has become, with quite a few vehicles parked right on the corner itself.

We have also observed lots of school children near Bim, between 12.00 and 13.00.

There was a minor road traffic accident there on Friday morning.  Please take care if you are driving in this area, and especially so when the roadworks begin.
