What's changing in Kalkan over the winter PDF Print E-mail

Kalkan PTT ATMWe thought you may like to hear about some of the changes taking place in Kalkan over the winter months.

When the season ended last year, we said that construction was going to be low key, but there is a bit more of it than we all anticipated.

In this report, we focus mostly on what is going on in the town centre, including an update on a few new shops.

Close to the D400 main road
But first a quick recap on the D400.  Workmen are busy with the footpath we told you about, and they are also extending the stone wall between the traffic light junction and close to the Samira Deluxe hotel. It's a bit messy up there at the moment.

We asked the construction managers about the proposed footbridge, from Kızıltaş to the town side of the D400.  They confirmed it will be built, but it may well be next year.  We did emphasise the current safety concerns of pedestrians, and urged them to give this some priority.

Supermarkets

Supermarket shuffle
Work is progressing on the new Migros supermarket, just down from Bim

Genpa has not yet arrived, where the old Adda supermarket used to be.

The Sevil supermarket is closing down, and in its place, phoenix like, will be another supermarket chain - A101. Pronounced "A yüz bir", or if you are an Efes fan, just remember it as "I use beer".

Whilst it is not 100% confirmed yet, there are strong indications that the former Teskom supermarket is, ironically, going to reopen as Kipa, part of the real Tesco group.

Greengrocers

Other shops
The Üçarlar manav greengrocers, across from Parc Kalkan, has slid 20 metres down the hill.

It now operates from below Ali Baba's Seaview restaurant

The restaurant is now exclusively on the terrace, and not on ground level.

Greengrocers

Meanwhile, the spot it moved from, is being developed into 2 new shops.

It looks rather odd at the moment, with a gaping hole where the shop used to be.

We don't yet know what kind of shops will be coming.

Surely not another supermarket or a bank, we hear you say!

Just down the road from here, and round the corner from Kaya restaurant, is a new cafe and cake shop, called Burak Pastanesi.

Need Construction

In the town centre, opposite the Merkez Cafe, for Need Construction it is something of a busman's holiday, as they completely gut and renovate their office.

The old office was quite small, but they now own the whole building, so they can extend out a little.

Just out of the main town centre, we have spotted a new ladies fashion shop on Kalamar Road, called Quazar Boutique.

Kalkan PTT ATM

The Kalkan PTT (Post Office), has finally got its new ATM in position.

However, don't get too excited, as they are still waiting for everything to be connected.

So please don't try and use it just yet or you may be waiting a long time.

We see that Wella Coiffeur has opened up again, this time, it is just down from the recently relocated Oz Adana restaurant

Kalkan harbour

Down by the harbour
It's all happening down at the harbour.

The harbour wall has not only been strengthened to withstand the ravages of the winter storms, but it is also being made bigger.

The harbour wall is being extended lengthways, by some 50 metres, and it is also being made a little higher.

You can just about make out the additional height in the photo below.

We suspect that this work is what was discussed at a recent Belediye meeting, as reported in KTLN.

Kalkan harbourThe extension is clearly a permanent feature, however you may recall that there is also planned to be, a temporary pontoon-like structure outside, and running parallel to, the main harbour wall.

This will enable more boats and yachts to stop over in Kalkan.  There is no sign of the pontoon yet.

Everything will be finished in time for the new tourist season.
