Kalkan Survey 20124. What you think about Kalkan

Although we believe our survey sample is probably representative of most non-Turkish visitors to Kalkan, the following numbers and percentages relate to our survey sample only

In our analysis, we may extrapolate the data where we believe it makes sense.

Remember that each of our 490 respondents represents a household or group of people.  We estimate the total number represented is over 1,300 people.

We hope you have fun poring over the results of the survey.

How satisfied are you with the environment?

4.1 Air quality

Take a deep breath.  98% of you are very satisfied, or satisfied with air quality. That's the same as last year.

 

4.2 Cleanliness of the sea

95% of you are very satisfied, or satisfied with the cleanliness of the sea. That's 2% better than last year.

 

4.3 Cleanliness of the beach

92% of you are very satisfied, or satisfied with the cleanliness of the beach. That's a slight improvement on last year, (89%).

 

4.4 Cleanliness of streets

75% of you are very satisfied, or satisfied with the cleanliness of the streets, (prior year 76%). Around 11% are dissatisfied or very dissatisfied - the same as last year.

If you are in Kalkan in mid-April, why not take part in Make a Difference Day, (MADD), where volunteers go on to the streets of Kalkan, in a pre-season clean up.  Read about the 2011 MADD.

 

4.5 Tranquility (absence of noise)

70% of respondents (66% last year) are either very satisfied or satisfied with the peace and quiet in Kalkan. Just under 19% are neutral on this, whilst approximately 11% are either very dissatisfied or dissatisfied (10% last year).

 

4.6 The views

As far as we can see, 99% think the views are great! The same as last year. No surprises there then.

How satisfied are you with the recreational facilities?

4.7 Access to countryside

83% are very satisfied, or satisfied with access, (prior year 84%). Less than 2% were not happy with access.

 

4.8 Beachclubs

71% are very satisfied, or satisfied with the beachclubs, (prior year 69%). Less than 1% said they were unhappy. 28% were neutral or had no opinion.

 

4.9 Boat trip services

86% said they were very satisfied, or satisfied, (prior year 87%). Less than 1% were unhappy - the same as last year.

 

4.10 Local day trip options

77% said they were very satisfied, or satisfied, (prior year 78%). 22% were neutral or expressed no opinion - perhaps because they are not especially interested in day trips. Less than 1% were unhappy - a tiny proportion.

 

4.11 Sport facilities

Only 27% are very satisfied, or satisfied with sports facilities, (29% in 2011's survey and 35% in 2010's survey).

A significant proportion, 70% , were neutral or did not have a opinion, (prior year 67%), which we interpret as people who may not be too bothered to have/use sports facilities, whilst on holiday.

Just 3% were dissatisfied or very dissatisfied.

 

4.12 Watersport facilities

38% of people are very satisfied, or satisfied with watersport facilities, (prior year 37%). 60% are neutral, or did not express an opinion, so are not too bothered either way - possibly not into watersport. Only 1% are dissatisfied or very dissatisfied - quite a small proportion.

 

How satisfied are you with local services?

4.13 Car parking

Around 52% expressed no opinion, or a neutral view on this. Around 38% are happy about parking facilities - down slightly from last year. About 10% are dissatisfied, or very dissatisfied with parking facilities, (prior year 11%).

 

4.14 Condition of roads

Only 36% of people are very satisfied, or satisfied with roads in Kalkan, that is a 2% reduction on last year. 39% expressed no opinion, or a neutral view.

25% are either dissatisfied or very dissatisfied, which is a significant number, but an improvement on last year, (28% in 2011's survey and 35% in 2010's survey).  The level of unhappiness is reducing year on year.

 

4.15 Electricity supply

46% are very satisfied or satisfied with their supply, which is an improvement on last year (41%), but still not as good as the year before that (52%)

A further 32% expressed no opinion, or are neutral, which we interpret as reflecting no major issues.

This leaves 21% who are either dissatisfied or very dissatisfied. - down from 26% last year.

 

4.16 Medical services

Almost half of our respondents (49%) said they were either satisfied or very satisfied - the same as last year's survey.

Another 49% expressed no opinion, or were neutral on this - probably very healthy people.  Just 2% were either dissatisfied or very dissatisfied (4% last year).

   

4.17 Property tax rate

68% don't feel strongly one way or another, either with no opinion, or a neutral vote.

31% are happy. Just 1% are unhappy. However, these figures include non property owners. Just looking at the people who actually pay the tax, roughly 69% are happy, 29% neutral, and 2% unhappy - pretty much the same as last year.

 

4.18 Rubbish collection

57% of people are very satisfied, or satisfied with rubbish collection, (prior year same). 39% expressed no opinion, or hold a neutral view, whilst 5% are dissatisfied or very dissatisfied, (prior year 7%, and the year before that, 9%).

 

4.19 Street lighting

61% are satisfied or very satisfied, (last year 60%), with 28% neutral or holding no opinion, and around 11% dissatisfied or very dissatisfied, (last year 10%).

 

4.20 Waste water/sewage system

Around 45% of our respondents are very satisfied, or satisfied on this subject, (last year 48%). Another 45% don't have strong feelings either way, leaving 10% dissatisfied or very dissatisfied, (same as last year).

 

4.21 Water supply

The trend here is not good.  Only 37% are very satisfied, or satisfied with the water supply, (prior year 47%, and the year before that 50%).  30% hold a neutral view - up slightly on last year.

Meanwhile 33% are either dissatisfied or very dissatisfied - up from 24% in last year's survey, and just 19% in the year before that.

Given the major supply outages experienced in 2011, this reduction in satisfaction and increase in dissatisfaction, comes as no surprise.  About 10% of all comments submitted with this survey, were negative on this subject.

Let's hope that the improvements carried out by the Belediye last year, make the water supply more reliable. 

 

How satisfied are you with local businesses?

4.22 Banks
Kalkan Survey 2012

Some 81% of respondents are very satisfied, or satisfied with their Turkish banks - up 1% from last year. Just under 19% don't have any strong feelings, either way. Less than 1% were dissatisfied.  All about the same as last year.

 

4.23 Bars
Kalkan Survey 2012

About 91% of you are happy with the bars in Kalkan - up from 88% last year.  8% are neutral, leaving around less than 1% dissatisfied or very dissatisfied.

 

4.24 Car hire

37% expressed no opinion. Of those who expressed an opinion, 85% were satisfied or very satisfied, (81% last year), and 2% were dissatisfied or very dissatisfied, (3% last year).

 

4.25 Coach service

57% expressed no opinion. Of those who expressed an opinion, 67% were satisfied or very satisfied, (65% last year), and 2% were dissatisfied or very dissatisfied, (3% last year).

 

4.26 Dolmuş service

33% expressed no opinion. Of those who expressed an opinion, 64% were satisfied or very satisfied, (75% last year), and 15% were dissatisfied or very dissatisfied, (5% last year).

This change in voting is probably a reflection of the fact that routes, and the frequency of service were cut back in 2011, compared to 2010.

 

4.27 Estate agents

69% expressed no opinion. Of those who expressed an opinion, 38% were satisfied or very satisfied, (same as last year), and 16% were dissatisfied or very dissatisfied, (12% last year).  The rest were neutral.

 

4.28 Legal services

67% expressed no opinion. Of those who expressed an opinion, 43% were satisfied or very satisfied, (last year 45%), and 12% were dissatisfied or very dissatisfied, (last year 10%).  The rest were neutral.

 

4.29 Restaurants

Around 97% are very satisfied or satisfied, up 2% on last year's survey. There are also a greater proportion of happy diners in the 'very satisfied' category, this year. Just over 1% were dissatisfied. That's yet another huge vote of confidence in Kalkan restaurants.

 

4.30 Scooter hire

83% expressed no opinion. Of those who expressed an opinion, 28% were satisfied or very satisfied, (32% last year), and 5% were dissatisfied or very dissatisfied, (2% last year).  Most were neutral.

 

4.31 Supermarkets

About 87% are very satisfied, or satisfied with the supermarkets, (prior year 84%). 11% hold no strong view either way. Only 2% are unhappy, (last year 4%).

We wonder how the influx of supermarket chains into Kalkan, will impact on the survey findings next year.

 

4.32 Taxi services

13% expressed no opinion. Of those who expressed an opinion, 70% were satisfied or very satisfied, (56% last year), and 16% were dissatisfied or very dissatisfied, (23% last year).

This is a significant improvement in how Kalkan's taxi drivers are perceived.

 

How satisfied are you with these other things?

4.33 Cost of living

This question has given some erratic answers over the years.  In this year's survey, 69% said they were very satisfied or satisfied.  Last year the figure was 53%, and in the year before that, it was 65%.

24% are neutral on this.  Meanwhile only 8% are now dissatisfied, or very dissatisfied - down from 16% last year and 10% the year before that.

This appears to suggest that prices are not seen as a major issue in Kalkan, and things are improving.

 

4.34 Management of street animals

Of all the questions we asked, this one shows the highest level of dissatisfaction.  The following table shows how feelings have changed since we first started our survey.

The trend shows the level of satisfaction reducing year on year, whilst the level of dissatisfaction is increasing.

Further, 23% of all comments recorded as part of this survey, expressed concern about street dogs in Kalkan. This was the topic that generated most negative comments.  Some comments praised KAPSA for their work, and said the Belediye should take ownership of this issue.

The next most common topic for complaints was water problems in Kalkan (10% of comments).

 

4.35 Quality of life

Around 94% are very satisfied or satisfied with the quality of life in Kalkan, (prior year 90%).  Less than 1% unhappy.

 

4.36 Traffic

66% are happy, 25% neutral, and just under 7% unhappy. Last year it was 62%, 29% and 10% respectively.

 

4.37 Overall, how satisfied are you with your experience of Kalkan?

Around 97% are very satisfied or satisfied with their overall experience of Kalkan, (prior year 96%).  Less than 1% unhappy.

The majority of the comments made by some of you, were full of praise for Kalkan.  Here are a few typical examples.

"We fell in love with Kalkan on our first visit and have been back four times in two years and have already booked four weeks for 2012."

"Loved Kalkan so much last year we are coming back again this year! Beautiful views, fantastic restaurants and lovely people!"

" People are wonderful, scenery stunning, and the restaurants are amazing.  Perfect holiday location."

"First visit last year and I'm hooked.  Never been back to the same place twice before.  Going back twice this year."

"Kalkan is a very warm friendly place for holidays and I consider it my second home."

There were some negatives though.  Of the 209 optional comments received, 23% were not happy about street dogs; 10% were critical of the fresh water supply; 6% were unhappy with too much property development, and 5% were unhappy with the reliability of the electricity supply.

Taking the findings as a whole, we reckon that the KTLN survey provides, once again, a pretty clear vote of confidence in this wonderful town, on the Turquoise Coast.
