Street dogs poisoned in Kalkan PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 27 May 2012

Dogs poisonedArticle updated: In our initial report, we told you that at least 4 dogs suffered an agonising death yesterday, in the Kızıltaş area of Kalkan.

We have heard this morning, that 5 dogs are confirmed dead.  (In an earlier update, we reported a further 7 dogs missing; they are now accounted for).

One dog survived, after a KAPSA vet managed to administer an antidote.

Some time after 20.30 last night (Saturday), it is believed that food laced with poison was put down on, or near Istiklal Caddesi.

The Jandarma attended, as did staff from the Belediye.  Local people came out on to the street, and some were visibly upset.

Below: The bodies of four poisoned dogs on Istiklal Caddesi.

We appreciate that the subject of street dogs divides opinion, but whatever your point of view, there really can be no justification for this kind of cruel behaviour.

The authorities would like to know who is responsible for this sickening act.  If you saw anything suspicious, or have any information that could be helpful, we would encourage you to contact the Jandarma.

There is no way of knowing if this is a one off incident, or whether further attempts will be made to poison animals.  We would urge people to be vigilant, and report any suspicious behaviour.

If you own a dog, you may want to take extra care when walking it on the streets of Kalkan, in case there is more poison about.

Below: The dog that was saved by the KAPSA vet, Hasan.
