Kalkan & Lycia by Cemal TorCemal Tor has been running his successful Desti Gift Shop business in Kalkan for many years.  Amongst the various gift items in his shop, you will find lots of books and maps, including books on local history and local walking guides.

Cemal has produced a number of his own books on the local area, and he has just brought out a brand new, updated book on Kalkan & Lycia, which is packed full of new photographs and lots of interesting information.

The book is a useful guide for the visitor to Kalkan, showing local places of interest and providing an insight into the history that is etched into the Lycian landscape.

Cemal draws upon his extensive archive of photographs and illustrations to bring the words to life, and he has supplemented these with a number of brand new quality images for 2009.

Cemal is an experienced photographer and will go to any lengths to get a great shot, and for this book that included hiring a helicopter to grab some amazing aerial views of the area.

If I was being picky, the only thing I would quibble with is how up to date his Kalkan temperature guide is.  It shows an average temperature for July & August of less than 28c, which doesn't exactly reflect my own experience over recent years.  If only it was that cool in the summer, here in Kalkan!

But let's not be too picky.  It's a good book, packed with great stories, helpful illustrations and lovely photos.  There is also a sister publication called Kaş & Lycia.  Both books can be bought in the Desti Gift Shop on Hasan Altan Caddesi, in Kalkan.  The Kaş book is also available at Cemal's brother's shop in Kaş. The books retail at 25TL and includes a free local map.
