Kalkan - coming soon on Turkish TV PDF Print E-mail

Ataman ErkulEvery evening at 6.30pm, Kanalturk broadcasts Turkey’s most popular travel programme, Tatil Keyfi.

Earlier in July, the show’s director and presenter were in Kalkan, filming the many attractions here which bring visitors from around the world.

The half hour programme will air on Thursday 6th August at 6.30pm, to an audience of millions, not just in Turkey but in 12 other countries in Europe and the Middle East.

Hosted by popular TV personality Ataman Erkul, (pictured right), the programme highlights the wealth of tourist attractions within Turkey and focuses on holiday resorts and areas which showcase upmarket tourism.

Interviewed by KTLN at the Pirat hotel on July 22, Ataman Erkul told us why he was so enthusiastic about doing a programme on Kalkan.

‘Even within Turkey, Kalkan is not so well known.  When Turkish people think of Mediterranean resorts, their first thought is usually Bodrum or the Datça Peninsula.  I have been to Kalkan many times and even though it is a small place, every time I come here, I discover new things, new places to see, new restaurants to try, new excursions to make.  Kalkan is so beautiful; it’s peaceful, quite lively and active but not too busy.

The type of visitor it attracts, both Turkish and foreign is more upmarket than many resorts.  There is a sophistication here which is very appealing but it also retains so much natural charm.  On this trip I have been to Islamlar for the first time.  I was amazed.

This mountain village, only a 10 minute drive from Kalkan is so different to the coastal plain in which Kalkan is situated.  The forest covered mountains, the rushing streams; it is so cool and green.  We visited a working mill powered by water and one of the trout restaurants.

Kalkan itself has so much to offer and within no more than a half an hour drive there are so many world class attractions.  There is always a new story to tell about Kalkan, no matter how many times you visit.

I am also intrigued by the fact that so many British people have chosen to make their permanent home here.  This is almost unique in Turkey.  There are other places which have foreign residents but here in Kalkan the British people are mostly professionals, well educated, and well travelled.  They have added a new dimension to life here.

In the programme, I interview two British residents who live here year round.  They told me about their life here, why they love living in Turkey and they also told me about Kalkan Turkish Local News (KTLN) and the services it provides for residents and tourists, both Turkish and British.

I interviewed them, then they interviewed me for KTLN.  That is a first for me - quite an interesting experience to be answering questions not asking them.’
