Missing walker on the Lycian Way PDF Print E-mail

John Joseph KirkhamA 68 year old British tourist from Fleetwood, Lancashire, has gone missing whilst walking on the Lycian Way in the Ovacik/Ölüdeniz area.

Mr John Joseph Kirkham, an experienced walker, has not been seen since Monday 10th August when he set off on the planned 9km walk, starting at Ovacik.  His wife raised the alarm when he failed to return by the evening.

The Provincial Gendarmarie and a specialist mountain rescue team (AKUT) are searching the area, and specially trained sniffer dogs have also been deployed.

Ten days is a long time to be on these mountains in such hot conditions, and concerns are growing for his safety.  It can only be hoped that as an experienced walker he has somehow managed to find some kind of help or refuge.

There has also been speculation that he may have been abducted, however regular Lycian Way walkers would regard this as highly unlikely.

His wife has said that he was well prepared for the walk, and he was carrying a mobile phone.  What has actually happened to Mr Kirkham is currently a complete mystery.
