Kalkan RoadsThe roads in and around Kalkan are often an interesting topic of conversation, for Kalkan residents and visitors alike.

Kalkan Turkish Local News would like to bring you a brief update on what is happening.

The Kaş - Fethiye Road (D400)
You may recall from previous reports that there were differences between the local road plans and those published by the central government department responsible for roads.  Local plans included exit/entry roads which were not in the plans from Ankara.

The Belediye appealed to Ankara to amend their plans, and we are pleased to tell you that Ankara has agreed to make changes.  The precise detail is to be worked out - this will be a matter for professional architects and designers.  However we know that for example, there will be some sort of entry/exit point by Luka Restaurant, which will allow traffic in and out of Kalkan town.

The question of a suitable junction for Kışla will also be addressed.  Again, precise details are not yet worked out, but at least there is recognition that a proper junction needs to be in place, rather than traffic from Kaş having to drive all the way into Kalkan, then double back.

Currently there are no signs of significant work on Kaş Road, although there are a couple of JCB type vehicles on site, not far from the Samira Deluxe.  The timing of when work will recommence is in the hands of central government and not the Kalkan Belediye.  When we see or hear anything, we will let you know.

Local Roads
Kalkan Roads

Believe it or not, there are 60 kilometres of local road that are the responsibility of Kalkan Belediye.

Whilst some areas of Kalkan have benefitted from improvements this year, certain areas are still left with unmade roads that are quite difficult to navigate.  For example bricks have been laid close to the school, in some parts of Kışla and in some roads running parallel to Kalamar Road.  Many roads in Kalamar Bay are also bricked.

However, there are still significant parts of Ortaalan and Kızıltaş that have seen little road surfacing activity.

The Belediye has a responsibility to improve the local roads and will be drawing up plans to prioritise roads for resurfacing (or more accurately surfacing, as they have not been surfaced before).  Apart from anything else, it is important that roads are accessible to the emergency services.

One thing that has slowed down progress is the fact that the current Belediye is having to deal with outstanding issues from the previous administration.  For example, debts of 300,000 TL relating to earlier road works are still outstanding, and will have to be paid before further significant work can be done.

Once we have news about any scheduled road works, we will publish a further update.
