Rain storms hit Turkey PDF Print E-mail

Many of us have watched with great sadness the unfolding tragedy in the north west of Turkey.  Rain storms and flash flooding in this area have claimed the lives of at least 32 people, and caused damage estimated at more than $100 million, according to reports in Hurriyet Daily News.

Tekirda province, and Istanbul's Ikitelli district have been seriously affected.  Roads have turned into raging torrents, sweeping away cars and even fully laden lorries.  The agriculture industry in the Marmara area has also been badly hit.

The local authorities and the army are preparing for more flooding, as the weather forecast for the next few days is for more heavy rain.  They are also having to deal with random looting.  There are reports of 70 people being arrested in the Ikitelli district alone.

There is some evidence to suggest that the flooding may have been made worse due to the construction of buildings on natural watercourses, and also blockages caused by other man-made debris.

This disaster has been reported worldwide, including of course, the BBC.  You can see reports from a Turkish perspective here:

Kalkan Weather
The adverse weather conditions are set to affect other areas of Turkey as well.  Here in Kalkan we have not had any serious rainfall recently, however there is a forecast for heavy rain and thunderstorms for later today (Friday 11th September) and into the weekend.

Kalkan has suffered from flash floods before, with damage mainly limited to road infrastructure.  Whilst the potential problems here are not remotely on the same scale as those in the north west of Turkey, the rain here in Kalkan can be torrential, with rainwater cascading down the mountain sides.  The flat basin of Bezirgan is especially susceptible to flooding.

Care needs to be taken, especially if you have to travel on the roads.
