Swine Flu - don't drop your guard PDF Print E-mail

The World Health Organisation declared some time ago that Swine Flu (strain H1N1) had developed into a pandemic.  At the end of August 2009 it announced that preparations should be made for a second wave of the virus - especially countries in the northern hemisphere with tropical climates.

So despite the fact that Swine Flu appears to have dropped off our TV news and newspaper front pages, there is still a risk out there.  Kalkan Turkish Local News asked local medic, Dr Cem Tolunay what advice he would give to people coming to Kalkan.

"Everyone looks forward to coming to Kalkan on holiday, but if you are feeling unwell, please follow NHS advice on getting a diagnosis before travelling.  If the signs of Swine Flu are present, you should not travel".

"There are routine checks when you come into Turkey, at ferry ports and airports, including body heat scanners, however these checks cannot be 100% certain to detect Swine Flu.  For example, if you have just contracted the virus, you may not yet have a fever".  Dr Cem also advises people to consider having the vaccination available for ordinary flu - the flu jab.

If you arrive in Kalkan and you think you may have developed the symptoms of Swine Flu, you should see the doctor.  This advice is different to that given in the UK, where you are requested to find a 'flu friend' to go on your behalf.

What are the most common symptoms to look out for?  A combination of any of the following:

  • High temperature/fever
  • Headache
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny nose
  • Muscle or joint pain
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhoea

Dr Cem had the following general advice, which should reduce the risk of contracting Swine Flu and other similar conditions.

"This virus is often transmitted through coughing and sneezing, and from personal contact, such as kissing and shaking hands.  Confined spaces can allow a build up of the virus in the air you breathe".

"Be aware of people around you coughing and sneezing, and if it's you - use a tissue.  Kissing and shaking hands are routine ways of greeting people in Kalkan, but be aware that the virus can spread through this contact.  Wash your hands regularly, and especially before eating".
