Why did the tortoise cross the road? PDF Print E-mail

tortoise aheadNot really a local news story this, but a heart-warming account of how a tortoise managed to cross the M25 motorway in Surrey, UK.

Although quite an unusual occurrance in the UK, it is something that most of us have come across at some time, in and around Kalkan.  Driving along the main D400 road to Fethiye/Dalaman you do sometimes see them ambling across the road.

The BBC report does not mention what time of day this happened, but knowing the M25 as I do, if it was in the rush hour, it would be easy to spot the tortoise, as it would be the fastest thing moving.

tortoise aheadI also like the fact that the tortoise was spotted moving from the middle lane to the 'slow lane', which shows quite an appreciation of the highway code for an animal with limited intelligence.  In fact a number of middle lane road hogs that I have encountered on the M25 could learn something from this runaway reptile.

The tortoise, nicknamed Freeway, appears to be from the USA, so whilst his knowledge of motorway regulatons may be good, he appears to be lost and far away from home.  Faulty sat nav perhaps.

Finally, a word of praise surely for the hero of the hour, who parked up on the hard shoulder and rescued Freeway.  His name - Mr Formby.

Turned out nice again.

Incidentally, the tortoise in this photo, in the hands of Katie-Ellen, is a Kalkan tortoise, and not Freeway.
