Kalkander Association News - October 2009 PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 13 October 2009
ShareOn Thursday 8th October, the Kalkander Association held a public meeting at the Pinar Büfe, behind Kalkan Beach, to let people know what they have been doing recently, and also to explain what kind of things they plan to support in future.

Kalkan Turkish Local News thought you might be interested to hear about this, so here is s short report on the work of the association.

The association was established six years ago by a number of Kalkan residents, who wanted an organisation that could harness the goodwill and community spirit of local volunteers, for the benefit of the entire town.

We quote from their website:

"Kalkander (Kalkanlilar Dernegi - The Kalkan Association) is a non-governmental organization established in 2003.

The association aims to foster community spirit within Kalkan, help to improve civil organizations and to raise consciousness regarding cultural, educational, sports, touristic, archaeological and environmental activities.

Furthermore, Kalkander aims to create and maintain collaborations with the local government as well as the private sector to benefit society in the long term.  In short, we wish to make Kalkan a better place".

Annual General Meeting
The annual general meeting (AGM) of the Kalkander Association took place on 29th June 2009, and a new chairman and committee were appointed, as follows:
  • Ali İhsan Benli - Chairman
  • Salih Karsak - Deputy Chairman
  • Hüseyin Yanar - Accountant
  • Nurgül Bektaş - Secretary
  • Ömer Bak - Committee member
  • Serdar Özcan - Committee member
  • Kemal Safyürek - Committee member

At the AGM, Mayor Saim Karakurt paid tribute to the outgoing Chairman, Ergun Duran, for his stewardship over recent years.

Recent events
The Kalkander Association has taken on the responsibility for running what used to be called the Belediye Çay Bahçe, near Kalkan Beach.  It is now called Pinar Büfe, and all profits generated are ploughed back into the local community.

In September, the Kalkander Association provided support for a Robert College art project, which saw a group of visiting students working with local people, to repaint the murals on the walls behind the Kalkan Beach playground.

Also in September, the Kalkander Association, together with the Belediye, jointly sponsored a public performance of the Jazz & Swing Festival, down by Kalkan Beach.  The group Swing Supreme, from Edinburgh, Scotland played at a number of venues, in a tour organised by local man, Robert Ferguson.

The Association provided support and encouragement to the recent Project Aware underwater clean-up, in the bays around Kalkan.

And in a similar vein, they also supported and encouraged local children from Kalkan's First School, to remove litter from some of the local beaches, in a clean-up campaign.

The Association has given its support to the Parents Association of Kalkan First School, in its campaign to raise funds to build a new amphi-theatre.  This will be a community facility which will provide a means of showcasing cultural activities in Kalkan.

The Association also performs an important ongoing role, by providing financial support for local students, in the pursuit of their educational aspirations.  Currently, they are supporting 14 students: 3 in primary school, 2 in high school and 9 who are studying at university.

Kalkan Turkish Local News thinks this is such an excellent scheme.  Not only is it a good way of directly supporting those students who need help, but it also indirectly benefits the families and communities from which these children have come.  For obvious reasons, much of this work is not publicised.  It goes on quietly in the background, but it is no less effective for that.

Goals of the Association
Many people enjoy the privilege of living in Kalkan.  Some believe that with that privilege comes a duty to give something back to the town and the community.  The Kalkander Association aims to do this by focusing on the following areas:

  • Promoting social and cultural activities in Kalkan.
  • Supporting the education of local children.
  • Working in partnership with the Belediye for the common good of Kalkan.
  • Contributing to the general promotion of Kalkan to a wider audience.
Anyone can become a member of the Kalkander Association.  The current annual membership fee is 120TL.

The website of Kalkander Association is being updated and the refreshed pages will be ready to view on Thursday 15th October.  This includes details of how to become a member.  Here is the link: Kalkander Association
