Share We wanted to remind you about the live theatre in Kalkan this week, and to let you know a bit more about the people behind the show.
Op Hoop van Zegen (Trusting our fate in the hands of God) is the name of the play that is to be performed behind Kalkan Beach this Thursday evening.
There will be two performances: the first at 8pm and the second one at 10pm. Performances are 45 to 50 minutes long. Admission is free.
There will also be a performance the following night, Friday 23rd October, at the home of the Yeşilköy Theatre Group, starting at 9pm.
This is a timeless story, set in a fishing village, and looks at the lives of the local fishermen. The organisers of this event are Martha Hauser, who lives and works in Amsterdam, and Nicole Heller, a German lady who first came to Kalkan 20 years ago and has lived here for 10 years. Between them, they have organised the logistics for the group's visit to Kalkan.
The director is Bob van der Lugt, from Rotterdam. Bob runs the Hayal Creative Workshops, where individuals can sign up to develop their performance skills. The group visiting Kalkan this week, signed up for such a course, which included this special overseas trip.
Bob told Kalkan Turkish Local News, "This is 'community art'. It is important because it brings people together, working creatively for a common goal". He added, "It is all about getting the best out of individuals, enabling them to achieve great things".
Also taking part in the production is Oya Capelle-Karisman, a professional actress from Istanbul.
Taking part are 7 Dutch actors, 7 actors from Yeşilköy Halk Tiyatrosu, and 2 actors from Kalkan. Plus a group of girls from Kalkan First School who will be performing a traditional Turkish dance, and around 20 children aged 9/10 from Kalkan First School, who will sing a traditional Turkish song (but not the 10pm performance, as it's past their bedtime).
The group of Dutch and Turkish performers has only had 5 days to rehearse and work together, so it has been hard work, but fun too.
Kalkan regulars will know that this is the fourth year that this Dutch group have performed in the town. The first performance in 2006 was at the Mediteran Hotel, but since then they have performed behind Kalkan Beach.
These people have come a long way to work with local people, and bring you these performances, so why not go along - support them and enjoy the thrill of live theatre in Kalkan. Share |
