Here is the Kalkan Turkish Local News round-up of the day's events. We have lots of photos at the end of this report. Headmaster Galip Karalan, and Mayor Saim Karakurt made the first speeches, and they were followed by a number of children who recited a few well rehearsed lines about Atatürk and Republic Day - all of which drew loud applause from the audience. The children then went on to entertain everyone with a number of excellent songs and dance routines. An anxious afternoon Events at the school were completed before the rain made an unwelcome return. The organisers of the evening party must have been looking anxiously at the skies throughout the afternoon. But they needn't have worried. The rain eventually gave way, and hundreds of tables and chairs were set out at the harbour, in time for the 7pm start. Once again, the school band was marching, this time in the dark, with a torchlight procession down to the harbour, where they were welcomed by the gathering crowd. Many Kalkan restaurants and hotels supported this event, by cooking food or supplying servers and waiters. A couple of local supermarkets also pitched up to provide drinks and assorted snacks. Other local businesses provided logistical support. We estimate that during the evening, there must have been at least 1,500 people down at the harbour - most of them enjoying a very tasty free meal of lamb, rice and salad, plus a rice desert. There was entertainment too, traditional songs, traditional dancing and a spectacular act which involved throwing flaming knives. The logistics for such a big outdoor event, which included catering for more than a thousand people are significant and far from straightforward. However, in Kalkan they seem to be able to put such events together remarkably well. We couldn't help wondering what it would take to do something similar in the UK. Can you imagine the forest of paperwork, risk assessments, health and safety checks and so on? It was a great way to end the 2009 tourist season in Kalkan. If you are already planning your 2010 visits to Kalkan, you may want to think about taking in Republic Day, 29th October.
