Commemorating AtatürkYesterday, Tuesday 10th November 2009, the Turkish nation commemorated Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, on the 71st anniversary of his death.

In Kalkan there was a ceremony at the statue of Atatürk (next to the Doy Doy restaurant).  At 9.00am local dignitaries and a small group of schoolchildren paid their respects, and the national anthem was sung.

At 9.05am precisely, everyone stood to attention and the coastguard siren sounded for 2 minutes.  The flag was lowered to half mast.

Everyone then made for Kalkan First School, where a number of children read poems and other tributes to Atatürk.

The children lined up to pay their respects and were remarkably well behaved throughout the readings.  The children who read their pieces out loud to the rest of the school were passionate in their delivery.

By around 10am events drew to a close and people went inside the school for refreshments.

Atatürk died at 9.05am on 10th November 1938 in the Dolmabahçe Palace in Istanbul.  Atatürk’s final resting place is in his mausoleum, at Anıtkabir, in Ankara.
