I find the most useful and interesting information is the Kalkan news.  I was particulary interested in the road improvement info.

Kalkan roadsHere is the last update we plan to bring you on this subject in 2009.

In this article we reveal details of the new D400 plans, (it's complicated), and also a few updates on local roads.

As always, we are relaying details of the plans, as they have been explained to us locally.  However, we would emphasize they are just plans, and whether things turn out in accordance with these plans remains to be seen.

Fethiye/Kaş Road (D400) Plans
This is a national road, under the control of the Turkish Highways Department (HD).  Work is continuing along the stretch of road from the bus station and past the Jandarma station.

Some residents of Kızıltaş have been concerned about the way in which old access roads to town have been severed, with no obvious new alternatives.  They do currently have a temporary compacted soil track leading down to Kaş Road, (which has been transformed into a mud bath by the recent rain), but clearly a permanent solution is required.

We can now tell you where we believe the proposed junctions will be.  Before we go into the details however, first a few words about the revised plans.

You may recall that Kalkan Belediye plans and HD plans did not agree.  The former showed a number of access roads between the main junction and Kışla, whilst the latter had none.  The Kalkan Belediye was not happy about this, and arranged for revised plans to be drawn up.  This week those plans were delivered to the Belediye Board for their approval.

We understand that the Belediye Board is now happy with what is shown in these plans.  They must now ask the HD to agree, and adopt them.

Time is of the essence.  The current roadworks are underway using the existing plans.  If the new access roads are to link into the D400, the contractors need the new plans soon, otherwise they may find themselves having to undo some of the work already done.

It is not clear what would happen if the HD refuses to adopt these changes.  Let's hope we don't find ourselves in that situation.  So the details below explain what will happen if the plans are indeed adopted.

Kalkan Turkish Local News expects to have a copy of the plans in the next few working days.  These will be published on our website.

Service roadFethiye/Kaş Road (D400) Junctions
Just off the main junction, there will be a new 7 metre wide access road by the side of the Arçelik shop.  This road will double back and run parallel to the D400 road, (narrowing to 6 metres wide in parts), passing close to the Samira Deluxe complex.

Çitlik Sokak, the road that joins the D400 close to the Kelebek Hotel, was recently blocked as part of the current roadworks, however, this road will be reinstated as a junction.

There will be another local road running close to, and parallel with the D400, on the Kızıltaş side, which is to come out near the Luka restaurant.

And also at the Luka restaurant, there will be a road that will take traffic in and out of Kalkan town.

The current access road to the bus station will remain.

There will be a junction for Kışla, which for safety reasons, will be moved slightly nearer to Kalkan, and away from the bend.

Our information is that ultimately, the existing junction providing access to Kömürlük will be closed.  Access will be via the Kışla junction, or another service road, Kışla Caddesi, just off Şehitler Caddesi (near Luka restaurant).

As far as pedestrians are concerned, there will be a new footbridge across the D400, which will connect Kızıltaş to the town, close to the bus station entrance.

A few words about timing.  We have learned not to make predictions about when things will be done.  We can however confirm that by May 2011 the contractors must complete the widening of a 2 km stretch of road, measured from the main junction (near the petrol station) to just beyond Kışla, or else face financial penalties.

Work on the road by the Arçelik shop is scheduled for winter 2009/10.  Beyond that, we cannot give any definite timings for this project.

Other Kalkan roads
As mentioned in earlier reports, we are informed that road improvements are planned by the Belediye in the Kızıltaş area over the 2009/10 winter.

Also this winter, the road down into town from the main junction, Şehitler Caddesi, will become a 25 metre wide dual carriageway.  The plans show that there will be a refuge in between the two carriageways. They also show that there will be a roundabout where Şehitler Caddesi joins Karayolları Sokak (where the Belediye and Thursday market is).

The new road to Akbel, which will carry straight on where the road currently bends sharply right (going uphill), looks like a longer term piece of work.  It's unlikely to happen this winter.
