Kalkan BelediyeThe Belediye Board met on 1st December 2009, and Kalkan Turkish Local News was there, listening to the proceedings.

It was a packed meeting, with almost 40 members of the public present.

Here is our report on the main topics discussed.

Emergency earthquake housing
Last month we told you how many years ago it was agreed that an area of 6,000 square metres in Kalkan town would be given over to an agency responsible for providing emergency accommodation in the event of an earthquake or similar natural disaster.

This land lies roughly between the cemetary and the bus station. The Belediye was opposed to the prospect of this land being taken over.  It has now offered some alternative land, which we understand is acceptable to all parties, bringing the matter to a satisfactory conclusion.

The D400 Fethiye/Kaş Road
This subject was discussed again, with the benefit of revised plans, incorporating a number of local access roads that were absent from the original plans.  A full report on this will be published on the Kalkan Turkish Local News website tomorrow.

Building height
There was a marathon debate, with contributions from members of the public, on the subject of how high properties could be built in Kalkan.  On this occasion, the discussion was specifically about the height of roofs, and even more specifically, the height of the wall above the ceiling of the highest floor, supporting the roof.  (On top of this you then have the height of the roof itself).

The discussion was around whether the current permissible height of this wall should be increased.  We believe the existing measurement is 50cm, and the proposed new limit was 90cm.  People argued that the current limit of 50cm was often breached, with no apparent sanctions imposed.  The fear was expressed that this new limit, if agreed, would be similarly breached.

After lengthy, and sometimes lively exchanges, the Belediye voted on the proposal to increase the height limit.  It was a tie: 5 for and 5 against.  The Belediye Board rules stipulate that in the event of a tie, the vote will go in favour of the way the Mayor voted.  As the Mayor was in favour of the proposal, the increased height limit was passed.

Budget for 2010
As we were unable to get copies of the budget we are not in a position to elaborate any further on what was discussed at the previous Board meeting.  The most important point made was that planned income for next year needs to be increased by 10%.  How this will be achieved was not discussed at the meeting.

Supermarkets
Once again, the Belediye has been asked to allow a major supermarket chain to operate in Kalkan.  Once again, they have declined to permit this.  It was interesting to see so many supermarket owners present to hear this news.

Other planning issues
There was a discussion about a building development in the Kalamar area.  The builder and a local resident were present to make their representations to the Board.  In essence, the argument was about the boundary wall of the new development.  The Board will look at the official plans and determine whether any breach of planning regulations has been made.
