Mouse island Swim 2016

The Mouse Island Swim took place yesterday, Saturday 8th October.

The weather conditions were close to perfect as this bunch of buoyant bathers bobbed across the bay, from Mouse Island towards Kalkan beach.  With each stroke they were raising sponsorship money for local charity Kaş 4 Kids (Busy Bees).

During the morning as the swimmers traversed Kalkan Bay, several Kaş 4 Kids volunteers were manning a number of stalls to raise more funds.  Lots of items had been transported down from the Kaş 4 Kids shop in Kalkan (situated behind the bus station) and displayed by Kleo Bar.  There was also a table full of home made cakes that did a brisk trade: all that remained were crumbs and a number of people vowing to avoid weighing scales for at least 24 hours.

AKUT people were on the water providing support to the swimmers and on land they set up a number of promotional photographs close to the Kaş 4 Kids stalls.

A good turnout
Given that tourist numbers are down this year we did wonder whether there would be a good turnout, but we needn't have worried.  A significant number of people were there to look round the stalls and to cheer the swimmers home at 12 noon.

In terms of charity fundraising the exact amount raised is still being worked out, but we understand that the stalls raised in excess of 3,500TL and sponsorship for the swimmers is easily a five figure sum.

Article update: A total of 24,000 lira was raised - approximately 20,000 lira from swimming sponsorship and 4,000 lira from various  Kaş 4 Kids stalls.  You can read more from the swim organiser at this blog: http://englishmanabroad.net/?p=1774

This has become a popular day in the Kalkan calendar and we hope and expect to see another swim next year.

A great achievement
We salute the swimmers on a job well done: Chris Davies (organiser); Jim Lumley; İlkay Utaş; Stephen Bentley; Mustafa Özbey; Felicity Davie; Solihin Thom; Amanda Magrath; Alex Smith; Jackie Molloy and Ergun Duran - plus three additional swimmers from AKUT, Eşref; Selin and Devrim.

Below we show you a few images from the day plus a video showing the swimmers as they arrived at Kalkan beach. Note: the video may be watched in full screen or you can watch it on You Tube.
