How fab to check out the web cams - one night I just feasted on the moonlit sea over Kalamar Bay where we have our villa, and just dreamt of being there.  Kalkan is therapy for the soul!

EU mobile data roaming charges scrapped but what about Turkey? PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 15 June 2017

Mobie data roaming chargesThe good news for people who travel around the EU is that from today data roaming charges for mobile phones have been banned.

According to an EU press release ‘consumers will be able to use their mobile device when travelling in the EU, paying the same prices as at home, ie to “Roam like at Home”. Any voice call, SMS and data session made while travelling abroad in the EU will be deducted from the monthly package of minutes, SMS and data in the home country with no extra charges.’

But Turkey is not in the EU so does it affect visitors travelling to Kalkan?  The answer is maybe.

As we understand it only Vodafone has so far taken the decision to include Turkey in this new ban on data roaming charges.  It may be worth checking with your mobile operator to see if they have any plans to follow Vodafone's lead.

If you discover that other mobile companies are going to treat Turkey in the same way as EU countries please let us know.

In the meantime, unless you are totally sure your provider won't present you with a massive bill after you get home, our advice is to always switch off data roaming here in Turkey and use the free WiFi that is widely available in hotels, villas, bars, cafes and restaurants around town.
